Dandelions are a great food, very nutritious for buns. The only thing to be aware of is that they are high in calcium and can be a diuretic. So if you notice any sludgy urine or him peeing where he shouldn’t, you might be overdoing the dandelions.
I would actually prob get rid of the pepper and baby carrot over the dandelions as a culprit for…[Read more]

Gabapentin is another pain med that is stronger than metacam and in a different class of drugs. I can’t speak much on Buprenorphine, but my vet gave me some gabapentin for my buns for the trip in case they got very stressed (it also has a slight calming effect).
I think for Pinky it will be a bit of a trial and error process to find a routine…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Small and big poop in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 4 months ago
Changing poop sizes usually means they are eating different amounts of hay. If they are very very tiny or irregular in size it can mean they have intestinal problem (either gas or stasis), but bunnies poops will also change a bit in size during the day. For example, my bunnies sleep a lot during the day, and when they first wake up their poops are…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Bunny won't eat pellets or anything hard in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 4 months ago
That’s good!
Sometimes when a bunny isn’t feeling well they will snub a certain food, so it could have been she had some gas or was maybe a bit dehydrated. If the problem with go off her hay and pellets continues or comes back, I would def dig a little deeper to see what might be going on medically.

I wouldn’t do coconut oil, but giving her some softer flooring should help. Do they look dry and cracked?

I’m not sure this helps, but lately with bouts of insomnia I have gotten up in the wee hours in the dark. Spike will hear me or see my dark silhouette and get scared like that. He’s 6 and should know it’s only me, but….
So I have started VERY softly saying “Spike it’s only me don’t be scared it’s just me.” And from a distance until I see he’s…[Read more]

Thanks for all the answers Dana! I mostly got it, but I have some follow-up questions and comments.
<p style=”padding-left: 40px;”>Perhaps you could put them both in separate carriers, and then open them at the same time? Or put one in a carrier, then carrier the other one in and open the carrier?</p>
I didn’t think of that, will try. Also will…[Read more] -

That’s good to know, I had no idea they could be asymptomatic. I’ll treat them both for mites and go from there. Thank you!

Interesting. Kidney stones in rabbits are often asymptomatic. Perhaps the blood is from a kidney stone passing. If that’s the case perhaps the other one will move too? Obviously, this is painful, so that’s why the vet gave you strong pain medication. The danger would be a stone getting stuck somewhere.

Yes it was like a red tinted pee (like almost pink) with tiny red blobs.

Dandelions are fine to feed everyday as part of the mix. So as long as he is used to them, it’s OK.

Was it pee with red blobs or streaks in it? Uniformly red pee is completely normal in rabbits. Blood in urine is usually normal looking pee with red blobs in it.

LBJ10 replied to the topic Can only one rabbit have mites? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 4 months ago
Rabbits can be asymptomatic carriers of fur mites. If they become stressed or ill, their immune system weakens somewhat and the fur mites are no longer kept in check. So it’s definitely possible that both of your rabbits have fur mites and your male has simply become overrun with them. You said he was like this when you got him, so who knows what…[Read more]

Hello again…
We have a LOT of dandelions in our yard. Totally organic. I harvest them daily for the G.Pigs, they love ’em.
Walter is a fan too. Is there a limit on how many I can feed him?
I think he’s fairly new to the fresh food thing, so working up the amount. I think this morning he got a little much, bit of pepper, baby carrot, th…[Read more]

Hi there, see my answers below:
1. So the towels and blankets Dana suggested are to obstruct the view, make the territory unfamiliar, and force them to at least pay attention only one to another? That’s why Wick added sheets?
I use them to block view of familiar territory. If you are in completely neutral spot they aren’t necessary.
2. If t…[Read more]
