Those are such precious photos! I’m sorry you’ve said goodbye, Meg, even though you knew it was inevitable…. It still hurts the heart.
I love that you had such a different bond with him in the final years. It sounds like he was Athena’s bun prior to that and the you and your partner became his true companions once she went over the bridge.…[Read more]

I get an error message if the VPN is turned on sometimes. Are you using one? Maybe that’s the problem?

Great, thank you both! I’ll increase the padding and keep and eye on it. Hopefully it clears up or at the very least doesn’t worsen. It doesn’t seem to bother him but I’m an anxious bunny parent!

If it’s a very small, hardened and light pink spot, as Bam mentioned, it could just be a callus which to some extent is normal over time and w/ age. As a part of improving flooring overall, I do think it’s important to offer a bit of variety as well so the rabbit can have some autonomy (though stick to flooring that you know is appropriate still!)

If its just a callus and the skin is intact, treatment as a rule consists of improving the flooring. You can use for example vet beds, sheepette, memory foam bathmats. Check the heels daily. Keep the nails short so the bun doesnt have to put any extra pressure on the heels. If the skin breaks, you’ll need to do wound care and wrap the foot or get…[Read more]

Hi all! My 6 year old lionhead has what I think may be the start of sore hocks. He’s got a bit of a callous on the pink part of his heel. It’s not large, bleeding or inflamed (as far as I can tell), but I obviously don’t want it to worsen. Hows the best way to help him? I have shaggy rugs and all bunny areas are carpeted but I could always get a…[Read more]

You might not ever see her mount him or display any obvious dominant behaviors, but her refusing his advances sends him a message that she will not tolerate that from him. I don’t usually worry about which bun will be dominant because it’s often very hard to tell. For me, as long as they are not fighting and are interacting with each other, that…[Read more]

Ah yes, I lived in a studio apartment for about 10 years and finding neutral space for bonding was very tricky! The bathroom was the only mostly-neutral spot I had, and even then I’m sure it still smelled like “home” to the buns. If you really feel like you aren’t making any progress, I had a lot of luck with doing sessions at a friend’s house. I…[Read more]

I see, noted. I’ll try as much as I can since I actually live in an apartment. I will try using the fence in the living room as to try the bigger space bonding you have mentioned. Thank you so much

Thank you so much, Dana, and thank you especially for all of your help. I so appreciated hearing about your experience with Bun Jovi. Please give him extra cuddles from me. ❤

Decided to try your advice with a larger space this morning. They both binkyed and were tolerating each other all day. Sometimes they might sit near each other and continued to share water and litter no problem. Once and a bit they would groom each other. Around 6pm my male started honking and started chasing her again. She can outrun him in the…[Read more]

You’re welcome! It’s great that he has a good appetite for timothy! If you opt to feed some bonus alfalfa then he should be fine with the 3 tbsp of pellets. It’s also fine to feed as a treat now and then even as an adult and won’t go bad as long as it’s kept dry. 🙂

thank you for your replies i can finally have a peace of mind knowing there’s nothing wrong. i just wonder why i didn’t read about it when researching young rabbit care or why the vet & the breeder didn’t tell me that it’s normal for a young rabbit to produce extra cecotropes. also i’m not worried about cosmo choosing alfalfa over timothy b…[Read more]

Young buns should have one source of alfalfa, but they don’t really need more. It’s usually easier to transition a bun from eating alfalfa based pellets to timothy pellets than it is to get them to eat grass hay when they are used to eating alfalfa hay, so most people recommend feeding young bunnies the way you are currently feeding (alfalfa…[Read more]

i think going back up one tbsp won’t hurt i’m not really sure why the vet suggested to reduce them if they’re so necessary but maybe mixing in some alfalfa hay would be good for him? i thought it was too rich for him because that’s what i was told. the first day i brought him home i fed him only alfalfa hay & when i saw the extra cecotrope the nex…[Read more]

Yep, it’s very common for young bunnies to have extra un-eaten cecotropes!
Leafy greens don’t have as much nutrition as pellets, they are more for enrichment and they provide some water. Adding in leafy greens is appropriate at this age, but doesn’t really replace the pellets. That said, your vet recommended reducing to 3 tbsp, so I would try…[Read more]

oh i didn’t think it was normal because he wasn’t eating the extra ones. cosmo is a mini lop so he’s half his adult weight now so once he reaches it then i’ll switch to the timothy pellets. i’ve never fed him unlimited pellets i started with 4 tbsp. i’ve already lessened the amount of pellets by a tbsp but that’s okay since i’m introducing leaf…[Read more]
