I agree that you could reduce pellets a bit without stopping them completely. You might also try feeding a variety of hays to help give extra nutrition and help encourage even more hay eating and healthy gut flora. Oat hay can be especially good and would help with his weight loss.

You could cut back on pellets, without stopping pellets altogether. Its safer to cut back than to stop, unless your bun is a confirmed voracious hay eater. You must keep an eye so he actually does eat a good amount of hay, because you absolutely don’t want any additional weight loss.

Pennyroyal has its sets of flowers in small “puffs” along the stems, like in this picture.

Peppermint has longer sets of flowers, mainly located at the tip of the stems Peppermint also has longer leaves and the whole plant grows  higher than pennyroyal.

Both can be aggressive and spread, but pennyroyal has much smaller leaves than peppermint. Are you sure it’s not creeping charlie? That is much more common in lawns than pennyroyal. At least it is in the midwest.

We have “free range mint”, it was here when we moved in, we encourage it for the bees, who LOVE it.  For all I know, it’s catnip.

Well that’s good to hear! I’ve also noticed that she’s been grooming a lot recently. I can’t tell if she’s in a molt or not. She’s specifically been focused on her back legs, chest, and left side. She needs a nail trim but I haven’t wanted to stress her out with all the gut issues.

If that is what happened, then they should go back to normal eventually. There was a bunny on here awhile back that was very skinny from malnutrition. I’m wondering what the member did to help him gain weight without giving him too much too soon.

I should also add we were gone for a little over 3 weeks and while I left detailed instructions for our pet sitter, it appeared they were not followed. I think in the time I was gone she only had a little hay and mostly greens but I am not sure. She was eating pellets when I left but wasn’t given any while I was gone.

I truly believe that they begin to understand that you’re trying to help them and they stop struggling. After awhile, it’s as if they are like “hey, this isn’t so bad” and they actually start to enjoy it. Blow drying on a low setting does seem to be soothing… as long as the sound doesn’t scare them.

We’ve been home for about a month and a week. She has been gaining weight steadily. If her intestines and stomach did shrink will they stay that way or is that something that will develop again with time?

Yes, it really does depend on the bunny. They may not want to go to a higher level and then through a “door” to get to their litter box. I agree with Dana. You should try a litter screen to cut down on the digging. How long ago was your honeymoon? If she was essentially starved while you were gone began losing weight due to a lack of food, then it is possible that her stomach and intestines physically changed (i.e. “shrank”). Perhaps her body is having trouble readjusting to eating food normally again?
