My rabbit decided he would use his litter box as a digging box. He digs out his litter
what can I use that is safe to make his own digging box that is not in his cage. My only concern is that I’m afraid he might think the digging box out of his cage is a litter box.
any ideas/suggestions
my other bunny climbed into my lap and bit me, also w…[Read more]

I had a bunny that would get dermatitis and lose fur in specific places. We weren’t sure the cause as tests didn’t reveal mites or anything. Just unrevealing irritation. Some bunnies can be allergic to different things. Some hays will have a small amount of weeds that are intermixed and that can cause allergies. (according to my rabbit savv…[Read more]

I have a couple of ideas. Clean up the pee outside of the box with a paper towel and then put part of the urine soaked paper towel IN the litterbox. This may encourage him to go in there. Also, you could make his litterbox enticing if you haven’t already. Put soft hay there and add some treats or fresh herbs like mint parsley etc. Since…[Read more]

Hi, wondering if anybody has had a similar problem/ can recommend anything?
My bunny has been losing fur for a year now, with dry flaky skin, we never see her pull out the fur, it just falls out. We think it’s cheyletiella, it begun when I purchased bedding from a different store than usual, her skin hasn’t been the same ever since. I’ve been…[Read more]

Hi!
Thank you for the replies! I’ve actually seen him squat beside it and pee, so I don’t think he’s peeing over the rim of the litterbox. Maybe I will try and put something there so that it’s not comfortable for him to pee in that spot, and he feels more encouraged to use the litterbox. If that still doesn’t work, I will try moving the litterbox…[Read more] -

I agree with Dana. This may be solved by simply rethinking how things are set up.

Is he actually standing outside the box and peeing? The one accident we had was a bunny butt reaching too far over the edge of the box and he peed over the side.

As the others said, there are a number of things that could cause this. It could be a URI, a dental problem, a blocked tear duct, etc. Each ailment would require a different treatment. He needs to be properly diagnosed by a vet so he can have the correct treatment.
He looks like a very sweet bunny. I’m sure you have a bond with him. It would be a…[Read more]

Unfortunately, there are no at-home remedies that could be recommended since there is no way to diagnose what’s going on (and generally rabbit ailments cannot be treated w/ OTC medications). The symptoms you are seeing can have multiple causes, such as dental and bacterial– all of which require proper diagnosis to ensure the correct and safe…[Read more]

Im sorry you are going through this.
Id urge you to reach out to rescues and no-kill shelters asap, because after Easter, they’ll be at capacity due to abandonned gifted “Easter” buns.
Theres no shame in surrendering a rabbit. Rabbits are fragile and high maintenance.
Rabbits can get bacterial “colds”. The snot contains complex carbohydrates…[Read more]

A few days ago I noticed my bunny had mattered fur under his eye. I tried to wash it off with a warm wash cloth, but it wouldn’t come out, almost like it’s not water soluble. Then today (probably 4 days after the matted fur appeared) he’s been sneezing a lot. He’ll sneeze like 6 times in a row, and has done it 3 or 4 times today and I haven…[Read more]

It can be wise to put the box in the spot the bun chooses. I once caught a stray bun (named him Yohio) outdoors, I quarantined him in a big hutch run that I’d built as a “summer cottage” for the bun I already had. I noticed he’d pee and poop in one corner of the run, so I put a box there. He accepted the box as his toilet right away, and I think…[Read more]

What type of flooring is in her home base, and where does she have hay available? Some buns will pee wherever they eat hay, and many will pee on soft surfaces. With one of my buns I couldn’t have any blankets in her pen unless they were stretched very tightly over a firm surface, and I had to position her hay rack so she could only reach it when…[Read more]

Hi! Thank you so much for your reply!
Yes that makes more sense, considering it’s just in that area and nowhere else. I will try lowering the sides of the litterbox and see if that makes a difference.
Thanks again! 🙂

While we say rabbits can be litter-box trained, it’s actually probably more accurate to say that their natural behaviors/inclinations lend themselves to use litterboxes. In reality, they often aren’t encoding that a random rectangular vessel is where they should go, but rather we set it up in places and w/ contents that make the rabbits want to…[Read more]
