I agree with your vet that it would probably be good to just keep him on the free-choice timothy pellets in this case. I think it would likely be safe to try adding a daily probiotic, there are some rabbit specific ones out there now (aside from Benebac, which is also good), so it might be worth a shot.
Does Benjamin live with another bunny? My…[Read more]

I agree this sounds like it could be a dental problem. Lionheads and lops seem more prone to molar spurs. It’s difficult to do a deep oral exam without some light sedation, but sometimes vets notice problems right away without it. If the vet doesn’t notice anything while the bun is awake, I would request either an oral x-ray or a deep oral exam…[Read more]

When you say the fur is matted around his mouth, I assume you mean it’s crusty. If that is the case, then that would suggest he is drooling. I would have the vet check his teeth thoroughly (i.e., not just taking a peek in there while he’s awake). The matting around his mouth is highly suspicious of a tooth problem and it would explain why he isn’t…[Read more]

If I recall correctly he would willingly eat 20-30ml per serving before refusing to eat any more and hopping away. These past few weeks, before I’ve been weaning him from the CC, he would eat 30ml in one sitting if I gave him 15ml with a few minutes in between syringes.

Definitely speak directly to the vet regarding this, but I will also add 1 week apart is unusual from my perspective. My Wick got penG shots for his URI (in addition to Baytril– he needed both) and the shots were every 3 days.

You mention x4-6 feedings of CC per day– how much are you giving each time? I’m wondering if you increase the amount per feeding while decreasing the number of feedings, you can leave more time for him to pellets and hay and try and regulate his GI a bit.

I also want to add that I’ve talked to a vet at Sherwood who is knowledgeable about their products and pet diets. She recommended the free choice timothy pellets that I’m feeding Benjamin now because the main ingredient is hay and I can safely feed him lots of it. She’s had similar situations with her pets getting through illness and needing to…[Read more]

Hello,
I am reaching out to see how I can care for my Lions Mane/Lop bunny. A while ago he was eating significantly less so I took him to a local small animal vet and he said that he has a ear infection. We gave him the (trimethoprim sulfa) and food supplement “Critical Care Herbivore” for the prescribed time and he seemed to improve.
Recently…[Read more]

Hey, I’m feeling very lost and stuck with Benjamin’s diet.

He had surgery for liver lobe torsion (there is a thread about his recovery if you need more details) and he had an episode of EC less than a month after the surgery.

Ever since the surgery his poops have been bad in quality. Messy, wet,…[Read more] -

Lops as a rule have difficulty getting the wax out and often need a bit of help from their caretaker. If you keep on top of it it never has to develop into a problem. A friend of mine routinely pull clumps of wax out from her lop’s ears with a pair of tweezers.

Oh it’s so interesting i had no idea before they can produce that amount and actually have troubles with ear wax just like dogs! Thank you so much, i’ll surely keep an eye on her and in her loppy ears! Thank you so much!

I agree. What you are describing sounds hormonal, rather than pain related. It has only been a few weeks since her spay, so I would give it more time. Things should settle.

Em made a good suggestion. I think it may be time to explore alternative forms of treatment. Delivering antibiotics using a nebulizer could be one of them.

That is strange that they would require an exam each time. My vet’s office will just send a vet tech out to do it.
