DanaNM replied to the topic How can I get my buddy to eat his hay? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 1 month ago

Did the vet check for an ear infection or discuss the possibility of E cuniculi? The symptoms with his ear sound like there is probably something else going on that triggered the stasis.

Since he is recovering, for now it’s OK to keep offering lots of greens and basically whatever he’ll eat (aside from fruits!) just to make sure his gut keeps…[Read more]

Hey all, I’ve got a 1 year old male harlequin free roaming house bunny called Binny, he’s super sweet (to humans, lol.)  He’s been neutered, we got him as a companion female for our 1 year old big lop eared fella, but when we discovered she was a he when we took him to get spayed. They don’t get along at all, so we keep the big guy back in the…[Read more]

Hay, I’m wondering that, too. I can’t get hold of pellets at the moment and she’s losing weight. I just need something that will help her keep on weight until her pellets arrive. I have porridge oats but not rolled oats, and I’m wondering if they’re okay?

I’m still not sure what the liquid was. If it was liquid cecotropes do you think she…[Read more]

I agree with Bam in that you definitely need to separate any unneutered/unspayed rabbit (even if they are both the same sex they will fight). It will actually do more good than harm to spay and neuter. It decreases them being too territorial (wanting to fight more) and in females it will prevent uterine cancer. They can also be more aggressive…[Read more]

@DanaNM, no doubt that pellets would be preferable, but I was asking about oats because she’s said she’s unable to get her hands on pellets there in Saudi Arabia and is currently planning to wait for a family friend to bring them from overseas (we don’t know when)?  So would oats be worth introducing in the meantime, is my question.  🙂

My sense on the oats is that it would be better to re-add pellets back, rather than give something starchy and low-fiber (given the cecal issues)? Perhaps a pellet brand that has no grains to see if that might agree with her better?

This is concerning. It would be helpful to know what that liquid was and where it originated from. Was it liquid cecotropes? Or was it blood? And if it was blood, where it did come from? Sometimes blood is coming from the uterus and people mistake it for coming from somewhere else.

To answer your question, yes, an infection in the uterus or a…[Read more]

Somtim3s you can cut vertical “gaps” in the mats, then gently pull the fur apart. Another method is to cut the mats horizontally, a centimeter or so above the skin. Then you brush or pry the remaining mats apart with your fingers. The matted fur as acrule consist of both “live” fur and “dead” fur that has already detached, so a lot of the fur will…[Read more]

Unfortunately it sounds like something that needs to be treated by a vet. Does it seem like she is having trouble breathing? Do you notice it more when she is active or resting?

My bunnies’ staple favorites are: organic palm plates plus the willow baskets and seagrass mats from the BB store. They also love love love the fresh willow wreaths from the BB store when they are in stock. (Basically any of the willow stuff from the BB store has been a winner with mine, relative to willow stuff from other sources). They also LOVE…[Read more]

Hmm the picture isn’t showing up.

If you pull the mats from the sides this can often help break them up without pulling the skin. If things are really bad it might be best to have the vet do a sanitary shave.

That’s great! So happy he’s doing better!

It’s great to have metacam on hand as well, assuming you have some left over.

I use the same method as Hazel for bum baths, usually in my bathroom sink. If you put a towel at the bottom (in the water) it helps them not slide around so much and makes things a bit easier. Then towel dry really well…[Read more]

Yeah, that does sound so hard, having such a lack of access to rabbit-savvy vets and also bunny supplies.  🙁  I’m so sorry!  I guess you could just try to be as proactive as possible in your situation, right?  Like there are 3 avenues available to you and you could pursue all 3:

    1) Finding sources for supplies as resourcefully as possible — I j…[Read more]

I was going to do that, but I didn’t have any hydrogen peroxide and I couldn’t just leave it like that for her to get her paws dirty, so I wiped it up. Her poops are all normal, it’s just the cecotropes that aren’t solid. That dark stuff didn’t look like liquid cecotropes to me, though. Yesterday there was some white, thick, sticky discharge and…[Read more]

SO glad he’s doing much better! 🙂  Every time I’ve used Simethicone with my bun there was a fast and almost miraculous turnaround. That stuff is magic.

About his poopy butt, one of my previous bunnies struggled with that a lot. If it had gotten stuck to him where it wouldn’t come off easily, I would put him in a small tub with an inch or two…[Read more]

What time is “half the day”? Rabbits typically sleep for the majority of the day naturally, so it may just align with Cookie’s sleep time.
