DanaNM replied to the topic An Unexpected Passing, We Don't Know Why She Died, This Is So Hard in the forum RAINBOW BRIDGE 4 years, 10 months ago

I’m so sorry for your loss. 🙁

Heart attacks and seizures do happen. A friend also had a bunny die very suddenly from choking (confirmed at autopsy because she was concerned it could be RHDV). Bunnies unfortunately have not been bred to live long lives, so a number of things can go wrong that we can’t really predict. The only thing to be…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Ideas for cage off the floor? in the forum HABITATS AND TOYS 4 years, 10 months ago

How do you plan to allow your bun out to exercise if your dog cannot be kept separate?

To address your question though, I’ve always built C&C cages to be cleaned form the side, by putting in doors on the sides. I imagine if you did it that way it would be possible to clean without too much issue, as you could add doors where ever you needed…[Read more]

I agree that you just have to keep an eye on it! If she starts nibbling then you’ll have to take it away, so it’s good to only give access to it supervised at first.

It’s really hard to gauge a bun’s weight from photos, but a vet visit could help you ensure that they are getting the correct diet for their age.

How do they feel when you feel their backs? It’s normal for teenage bunnies to be a bit lean, but they should still have good muscle along their spine. The spine should feel like small bumps, so you can…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Bond keeps breaking every few weeks in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago

I agree with Wick that they probably haven’t been completely bonded after each re-attempt.

I think starting in neutral is a good idea, but then you want to be sure to really “cement” them in neutral before moving them to less neutral. I usually will keep my pairs in neutral for 2-4 days AFTER they appear to be totally bonded, then move them to…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Pulling fur in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago

    Is Sage spayed?

The fur pulling from the head could be rough grooming, but it sounds more like nipping. Or since one (or both?) buns isn’t neutered, could be a precursor to mounting?

In general I don’t like to let buns have access to each other through a fence, because nipped noses can happen fast and lead to injuries and hard feelings between…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Pls help! Buns had a big fight in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago

If he isn’t bleeding then he’s prob OK, but good that the vet will give him a once over.

This probably goes without saying, but definitely make sure that doesn’t happen again. If the fighting was really bad, it may be hard to bond them, or they may benefit from a break from bonding sessions.

DanaNM replied to the topic 5 months of bonding stubborn couple in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago

That doesn’t sound too bad, it could have been a bit more tense because of the pause between dates. I would keep up with the cage swapping, and yes, the more dates the better.

Try if at all possible not to end on a bad note. That could mean even ending the date early when something good happens, just so you aren’t tempted to keep pushing them too…[Read more]

As long as your rabbit is not ingesting any of the materials, generally any stuffed animal is fine! Some rabbits are inclined to rip through stuffed animals, so if you discover your rabbit is one of those, then a stuffed animals is not in her future unfortunately.

Hello, I was wondering if getting a stuffed animal for my bunny is safe? She’s a single bunny and I’ve heard of bunnies loving stuffed animals to keep them “company” if it is safe, do you have any recommendations of what kind?

Here are many videos on different nail clipping techniques: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Grooming#Trimming_nails

In terms of handling, he is likely always going to strongly dislike carrying, and he can likely still tolerate being carried in order to get through a nail clipping.

DanaNM replied to the topic Bunny wet poop – a cry for help, tried everything in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 10 months ago

That doesn’t look too unusual in terms of how they are reaching down for the poops, but that is very interesting that they seem deaf! I wonder if that could be related at all?

Dental issues are also pretty common in lops, are they good hay eaters?

DanaNM replied to the topic Should I neuter my rabbit? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 4 years, 10 months ago

If you aren’t experiencing any behavioral problems and you don’t plan to bond him, then there isn’t a real need to neuter (and you don’t need to rush into it), because male rabbits aren’t at risk for reproductive cancers like females are.

4 is not too old, so as long as your vet is rabbit savvy you have some time to think about it. My old vet…[Read more]

You intuition is correct in that it isn’t a great idea to get him “used to” being on his back. I would have been very concerned with the way the second person was handling him.

“Tonic immobility” or “Trancing” as it’s commonly called is somewhat controversial, because some studies have shown it to be very stressful to the rabbit, although they…[Read more]

I saw a similar post elsewhere and I vaguely remember that it had to do with outside critters or a mouse go into the house for that person. Turns out their bunny was able to sense the mouse in the house faster than the hoomin could find any signs of it! hopefully this isn’t your situation but i though i would share it

If you want to encourage more activity I recommend putting his kibble/pellets into a treat ball so he has to work for his food and it engages his mind. Same with teaching him tricks for treats. My boys went through a “teenage” phase I call it where they were full of attitude and didn’t want to be around me. I just continued hanging out with them…[Read more]
