Can bunnies eat cantaloupe? My research told me mixed things, I know not to give them the seeds but I’m not sure about the rest. I read that it’s a good summer treat by some but others said that it’s probably best not to give it to them. If they can have it what parts can they eat? (Could you show me with a picture for what they can eat please?)

Yes I pretty much live in the woods. We don’t have rattlesnakes, bull snakes, or anything like that. We have copperheads and that’s it. We have king snakes and that’s about as big as they get. Corn snakes, black snakes, and garden snakes, is pretty much all we get. I would make the wire pretty much small that way nothing could get in for sure.…[Read more]

Do you live in a rural area? Honestly, it would depend on the snake. A large snake like a rattlesnake or bullsnake can kill and eat a small adult rabbit. If snakes are a concern, then you would need 1/4″ wire mesh and nowhere for them to squeeze underneath.

    Hi everyone.

I am the first time owner of a rabbit

All my experiences have been with cats and dogs.

I am completely astounded at the mental and emotional intelligence of rabbits.

I am enthralled by the sweet , quirky, expressive personality of Peaty.

He is a 2 year old neutered male.

I think a Mini rex X Netherland Dwarf.

    I have had…[Read more]

This will be outside. If it is not predator proof fully I’ll sit and supervise while they play. If I find that nothing can break through I might consider letting them out unsupervised. Also I live in East Tennessee. Would snakes be a problem to adult rabbits?

Are you planning this for outdoors or indoors? If outdoors, are you going to supervise or will they be allowed in it unsupervised?

I agree that welded wire is the safest bet for outdoor enclosures in general. If the plan is for them to be in the area unsupervised it must be very very secure against predators.

When a rabbit is spayed the uterus is removed, so if your bun is spayed there would be no risk of this. But I agree with Bam that it would be uncommon in rabbits to begin with, a more common concern would be uterine cancer.

My cat had pyometra before I adopted her, it is fairly common in unspayed cats and can be life threatening. Thankfully she…[Read more]

Sounds like the right dose, but meloxicam isn’t a very potent painkiller- it is similar to ibuprofen for humans. Vets can give stronger stuff, opioids like buprenorphine or fentanyl.

Great that her tummy is moving! I’m glad they’re keeping her, I would’ve wanted that too. It feels a lot safer!

Sounds like her dose is about right then? I think it’s just not doing it for her. They have her on a IV of pain relief at the vets now and she seems to be feeling a little better. Good news is that her gut is moving again and she is pooping so thank God for that. She is still not eating by herself yet but at least we are a little step in the r…[Read more]

I was completely wrong about Calpol. I am sorry.

Calpol is paracetamol. There are different strenghts it seems? It makes a lot more sense to give paracetamol instead of ibuprofen in combination with Metacam. It is a rabbit safe drug.

The metacam dose you gave was 1.5 mg/kilo bodyweight calculated like this:

Standard dosage for dogs is 0.1 mg…[Read more]

I would suggest building your own if you can’t find what you need. Welded wire is more appropriate. However, if the run is not predator-proof, then they will still need to be monitored closely while using it.

Keep in mind that fencing sold as “rabbit wire” often has varied sized holes where they get larger toward the top. You need something that…[Read more]

I apologize for not responding. It was in the middle of the night for me. Bam gave you some good advice. Medirabbit is always a good resource for finding dosage recommendations for different meds. I do hope that the IV and pain meds will perk her up. I agree that she should have probably stayed at the vet longer instead of coming home.

That’s okay, it’s a relief to here I was right in force feeding her – I was worried a bit there that I’d somehow made it worse

& yeah, the prices are absolutely crazy. In Ireland there are also no insurance companies that will cover rabbits, so everything is pay out of pocket. Since September, she has cost over €3k in vet bills. Her most recent…[Read more]

Yes, I’m sorry, I didnt realise that she was so freshly out of surgery! You were right to feed her.

I hope she’ll perk up considerably with IV fluids and pain meds, possibly also abx. There’s only so much we can do at home. It does get very expensive though, according to my insurance company, vet fees has increased by 25% during 2023 due to…[Read more]

Ok thank you!! So what do you all suggest I should use instead. I can’t seem to find any larger runs with thick rabbit wire. Should I just make my own? I want them to be able to run around when they want. I know the hutch will be too small for them

  • Profile picture of Em

Em replied to the topic Rhinostomy Experiences in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 1 year, 4 months ago

I only force fed her as I was pretty sure it wasn’t an obstruction based on the fact her surgery was so recent so I assumed it was due to her pain management not being strong enough.

I also checked the camera I have on her and she didn’t eat during the night from what I can see. I just dropped her up to the vets there. Of course it would be a ban…[Read more]

I’m sorry, so glad you’re taking her in!

I’d not keep feeding her if she has eaten within tge last 6 hours. If there is an obstruction so nothing can get out of the stomach, feeding is bad. Even giving water is bad if there’s an obstruction.

Calpol is ibuprofen. I’ve never given ibuprofen to a rabbit. Medirabbit days 3-10 mg per kilo body weight…[Read more]
