Nothing is wrong with Blossom so I’m sorry for the title scare, I don’t know how else to word it. Anyway I was watching vet shows and a dog on it had pyrometra and it got me wondering “what does pyrometra symptoms look like in a bunny?” I trust you all with that information more than me just researching it on my own, (because of all the misinformation out there.)

Pyometra is uncommon in rabbits, rabbits tend to get other uterine problems. The most common are thickening of the uterine wall and uterine cancer. It is probably due to high levels of estrogen. I can’t remember that we’ve had a case of fullblown pyometra here. Spayed buns of course can’t get pyometra.

Pyometra means there’s bacteria in the uterus. The symptoms you get when you Google seem correct. A thick grayish vaginal discharge seems to be the most common symptom.

Pyometra is not uncommon in dogs. I had a dog once who got the beginnings of pyometra. I noticed something was wrong because of increased thirst and urination so it was caught early. She was spayed and made a full recovery.

When a rabbit is spayed the uterus is removed, so if your bun is spayed there would be no risk of this. But I agree with Bam that it would be uncommon in rabbits to begin with, a more common concern would be uterine cancer.

My cat had pyometra before I adopted her, it is fairly common in unspayed cats and can be life threatening. Thankfully she was spayed by the shelter and is doing great now. <3
