You can do that, and it’s actually better if he eats by himself. You need to keep a close eye on his weight though, if he loses weight you have to intervene and add for example a syringed evening meal.

Here’s a picture of my bun’s spay-incision- area. She was spayed (full ovariohysterectomy) 3 weeks ago.

As you can see, practically all fur has already grown back!

If she is unspayed, then yes, she could be false nesting (if you are 100% certain she hasn’t had any contact with males).

It’s really flexible but strong, if that makes sense? It’s heavy enough that it will lay nicely on the floor.  You can cut it with a utility knife easily (or prob kitchen shears) but as long as the buns can’t access and edge they won’t be able to chew or scratch it.
