Bam replied to the topic Would this be OK hay? in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 7 months ago
You could perhaps find a hay that’s neither timothy nor orchard? There are many types of grass hays, brome, fescue, rye grass (not from the cereal hay) and also oat hay.
If you can get the hay analysis for the orchard/alfalfa you could perhaps adjust your bun’s diet accordingly. It’d mean going pellets free and avoid other calcium sources,…[Read more]

Oh yikes, I’ve never seen a horse allergic to hay before, I bet that’s not fun. I haven’t tried it, I’m nervous to just buy it since the buns are in my bedroom but if I can find it in a store I can always sniff it and see what happens haha. I don’t mind taking the L for the hay that works for me (reactions are very similar to season reactions with…[Read more]

Hey!
What a tough situation to be allergic to hay :/
This is a really random thing to add but have you tried haylage? My friend has a horse that is allergic to hay so she feeds him haylage. A couple of places on Google say this is also fine for rabbits. That way you could possibly feed Timothy haylage or find a cheaper haylage alternative, so…[Read more]

Hey! I feed my rabbits Orchard grass hay and in my area it tends to run 5-10 dollars higher (sometimes more) than timothy, especially at my local feed stores. I can buy 50 lbs of timothy for $24, while the biggest bale I can find locally of orchard is 10 lbs and $20. I can’t feed my rabbits timothy because I am SEVERELY allergic to it, I’m still…[Read more]

thank you! i’ll use gloves until she seems to calm down.
i dont think so, i make sure not to pet her when wearing a strong lotion or perfume, the soap i use doesnt have much smell at all and she’s never really seemed to mind it before. i also wash my hands before petting her if i’ve been with another animal.

Now that the mini’s have upgraded to the same size/style of litter box, we’ve begun moving soiled litter/boxes around between the two pairs. The mini’s didn’t care at all about Smudge and Scout’s litter being introduced to their box. S&S were definitely more curious and somehow I got lucky that it almost seems to encourage them to pee on the…[Read more]

I only have experience with French angora/Jersey wooly fur type. It’s wool, but it has guard hairs. The guard hairs help prevent matting. I would only groom once per week as a general upkeep. Molting, of course, required daily grooming.
I don’t know if the concept is the same, but I assume it is. I found it much easier to start underneath and at…[Read more]

So I had this the bun who had stasis last December his weight was 2.2 original then dropped to 1.6 more or less since it’s a digital scale not accurate as the “kinda manual” when you see actual pointer thingy I don’t see any parasites on the poop though it’s looking normal more or less his leg kinda weaker now though. Should I increase pellets…[Read more]

In my honest opinion, I think her weight is fine as long as it is stable, considering the small size of Lionheads.

Thank you! I woke up to a full box of perfect poops this morning, so I’m thinking it was just temporary. Maybe even stress from the fireworks. He is eating very well today, taking treats, etc. so I’m trying not to worry!

Coccidia? No, I wouldn’t think that looking at these pictures. Dana is right, irregular poops, teardrop poops, etc. are caused by the gut slowing down and/or dehydration.

Thank you! That’s what I was thinking as well. He is eating and drinking like normal and he is acting totally fine. I’ve noticed that he’s done this a few times since his episode of stasis a few months ago and it always just sorts itself out with extra hay!!

To me that looks more like potentially some GI slow down, maybe due to gas pain. Gas or stasis are much more common causes of smaller or irregular poops than coccidia.
Coccidia tends to cause diarrhea and lots of soft poops, not just the irregular shaped ones. I think since his poops went back to normal I would just keep an eye on things. It…[Read more]
