Thank yo for your quick reply DanaNM! Syringe feeding stopped a couple of days ago – she fought tooth and nail and wouldn’t even take water, she was so stressed by the sight of syringes.  I have been in touch with the vet daily (phone), I asked about more pain meds a couple of days ago, it was a no go. I’m wondering what a reasonable amount of…[Read more]

Hi Lauren! Just wanted to check in re: your rabbits. Sorry you didn’t get a reply back. How have things been with the flooring and temperature?

That’s weird they are so slippery!

I know sometimes with yoga mats they are slippery when you first get them, but if you wash them with just regular liquid soap (I do this in the shower) it removes the slick coating and makes them much more grippy. Maybe you could try giving them a wash?

I am surprised that she still isn’t eating well at this point, and I also think you should have been given more pain meds. The shelter I volunteer at restricts activity for 14 days post spay, so you still should so make sure she can’t jump around or she could tear something.

Keep syringe feeding until her eating is back to normal, and keep…[Read more]

    Hi there,

I’m actually going to deviate from Wick slightly, but her advice is very solid and definitely the safest way to go!

I would say IF you are able to supervise them 24/7 for a couple weeks, you may be able to keep them together. But you want to be able to supervise closely because hormonal surges post-spay can cause fighting. If you…[Read more]

    1. For spay recovery and for hormones to get back to normal, perhaps only a couple more days. I haven’t had a female rabbit through spay recovery, but I know it takes longer for them to recover vs. a male recovering from a neuter. If they both seem recovered and are acting as they typically did prior to the spay (ex. Some people report their…

Wick & Fable replied to the topic Clipping dew claw trouble in the forum DIET & CARE 6 years, 3 months ago

The dew claw does need to be clipped, as it will continue to grow like any other nail. At long lengths, it may grow into a spiral (making it difficult to clip and a hazard for the rabbit in navigating the environment safely; similar to a regular nail), and it may begin growing towards/into the paw if not addressed.

Similar to finding out “the…[Read more]

    Follow up questions:

    1. How long should I separate them?

    2. Do they need to be completely separated to where they can’t see each other at all?

He has+ been peeing and pooping normally, and the smell went away after one day. I opened the window near his litter box and the smell was gone the next day. I’ll check out that video and see what happens in the next few days.

Hello! I am new to the forum (and forums in general).  Our bun (6mo Mini Rex) was spayed a week ago, discharged later the same day with 2 doses of metacam. We went through syringe feeding Critical Care (painful for everyone). No luck with baby food or homemade green puree. Day 6 after spay, our bun is peeing and pooping fairly well (plenty of…[Read more]

Wick, thank you so much for that info!

While I understand that rabbits don’t recognize each other as family or siblings, I did not realize that they could have baby bonds that break as they mature. It’s great that you pointed out that a formal bonding might be able to progress faster. Hopefully it will since they’re familiar with one anoth…[Read more]

Yesterday was slow, overall, with no major changes until after dinnertime (8:00-9:00 PM-onward). Hunny took several bites of pellet mush, romaine, and cilantro. She had varying difficulty with each, but it was a joy to see her seeking out food by herself and eating it. We aren’t at the stage yet where Hunny can eat a piece of romaine in its…[Read more]

Hello! I’m having a lot of trouble clipping Wilburs dew claw nail. It’s so tiny and tucked away but really sharp, pointy and long. Since he’s a lop his paw-fur is really long and I have hard enough of a time clipping his other nails, the dew claw just gets covered up! Is it bad if this nail isn’t clipped? I know if the back foot nails aren’t…[Read more]

Regardless of being littermates or not, they should go through the same bonding process as two unrelated rabbits. Rabbits do not recognize family-units as humans do, so being from the same litter does not bear a lot of weight towards a lifelong bond. Many people confuse “baby bonds “as a result of being siblings; in actuality, any two baby rabbits…[Read more]

    Hi all,

I’ve been trying to research bonding littermates, but I’m getting a lot of mixed information and I haven’t come across anything that relates closely to my situation.

I have 2, 4-month old females that I brought home as littermates. They were spayed about 2 weeks ago. Just today I noticed that they were engaging in some dominance behav…[Read more]

I think the mats I bought have siloxane or something in them. It doesn’t appear to be toxic or anything but I do wonder if it will make the buns slip around more in the other flooring. They don’t appear to be having any trouble.

I walked in the mats barefoot and definitely noticed it was more slippery when I was back on the vinyl.

    Anyone not…[Read more]

It could be his poops hat are smelly. Even neutered buns can have strong smelling poop. It’s then a strong onion-like odour.

Have you checked his anal glands? They can become plugged up. Here is a nice video on how to clean them: https://youtu.be/_x9dbSUdomg

Some rabbitfoods have odour-reducing components, most commonly yucca schidigera.
