Bam replied to the topic Overweight in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 4 months ago

For rabbits as for people, caloric control is way superior to increased exercise, when the goal is weight loss. Exercise is great for many reasons, incl for people or buns who happen to be a bit on the heavy side (or “pleasingly plump” as my bun Bam preferred putting it).

Some vets recommend putting the bun on a hay-only diet, but a rabbit savvy…[Read more]

Yes when the vet mentioned testing for diabetes she said it was unlikely but worth double checking since test is easy and non invasive etc.  Said she could count on one hand the number of rabbits she’s seen with diabetes.

Thank you so much, would appreciate any extra info. I find it always helps to go into a visit well armed with knowledge, that…[Read more]

    Hi!

So every site is going to say it differently — so in my opinion, there is no “minimum to maximum” of space you need for a rabbit. However, the more space the better!! I have one rabbit and his xpen + crate (crate door always open to enter pen) is 77 inches in length, 33 in width. Although, it’s important to remember the following: How many…[Read more]

I’d be more inclined to think its EC, tbh. Diabetes is very rare in rabbits. There are some drugs that could help kidney function, but the info I have on that is sth like 5 years old. I will try to find my notes from the EC webinar.

Asriel and Bombur’s Bombur has chronic EC that affects his kidneys. She has been managing it though, with repeat…[Read more]

Azerane replied to the topic Slowly Transitioning to Free Roam – Need Help Getting Bun Downstairs in the forum HABITATS AND TOYS 5 years, 4 months ago

Are your stairs timber or carpeted? Timber stairs are very slippery for bunnies because they don’t have any paw pads for grip. In addition, rabbits struggle going down stairs because of the way they hop, it risks them tumbling over. My rabbit used to fly straight up the stairs, but was always much slower going down and used to take each step more…[Read more]

Thank you. Unfortunately after closer supervision today I realised her water intake has increased. I watched them all afternoon from the time I got home from work and she drank 5 times in the time Apollo drank twice, and she drank for longer times than he did.

I know it’s not diabetes because with her weight loss at her first vet visit I…[Read more]

Any sudden temperature change above 10 C is dangerous, even if just for a few hours unfortunately. You sure are in the RHD danger zone there. 🙁

Is she going to stay in the hutch only while outside or is there going to be a free roam area she will have access to?

It’s really spring again: the sun is high enough to get some sunshine in the house. Breintje took his chance, of course, and heated all his sides. Afterwards he did one of his rare flops ^_^

    Ahhh yes… Warm butt!

The left side a bit 🙂

    ….. and flop!

Agree with Bam. When I pick up my rabbit (I only do it when there’s no way around it), I start at the head and slowly slide my hands over the top of their body, my fingers going underneath while my thumbs stay on top. This helps to keep them from jumping up or forward.

Hi Az! I’m very sorry to hear Luna isnt well.

As LBJ says, weightloss without a marked decrease in food intake does make one think of really bad things. I think its very wise to supplement her with CC. How is her water intake? (Diabetes would cause weight loss but also a vast increase in thirst and urinary output).

EC is a possibility, but when…[Read more]

Azerane replied to the topic Is my bunny's relationship with my cat too rough? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 4 months ago

I have two cats and two rabbits. I got my cats as kittens after I already had the rabbits. I never allowed any contact from my cats because I didn’t want to encourage anything. I allowed them to sniff noses, but any paw lifting from the cats, any hint at play behaviour and they were immediately told off and separated from the rabbits. As kittens…[Read more]

Azerane replied to the topic Fleece vs Fleece Liner – What's the difference? in the forum HABITATS AND TOYS 5 years, 4 months ago

My understanding is that a liner is specifically made with an absorbent layer in between outer layers of fleece. Very common in the guinea pig world.

Personally I just use plain fleece fabric and just fold it in half so it’s double layered.

I don’t like pee pads. He has access to them but unless it is very cold or raining he goes out to potty. He’s actually gotten to where he loves going out and will stand at the door and howl if I go to slow getting my other 2 dogs ready to go out.

Its actually a good sign she seems mad and offended. Is she taking the treats? Does she move her legs normally?

If she is just angry and scared, she will forgive you. Rabbits do that. They can be miffed for a few hours though. I’d try not to fuss over her too much, but keep a close eye to make sure she’s physically alright.

    Sometimes we have to…[Read more]

I have two bunnies, who run around my room everyday.  I normally scoop them up like footballs to support them to keep from scaring them, but this time she jumped away and I tried to catch her before she fell. My bed is up pretty high, so I was worried the fall would hurt her. I grabbed her back, like how you would scruff them but lower close to h…[Read more]
