Hey guys. I have a wild Eastern Cottontail rescue. My dog tore up the nest and injured the mom in our backyard on July 4th 2020. She was days old. Eyes weren’t opened yet. We did a lot of research and formula fed her. Against all odds, she survived and is a beautiful, thriving,  adult cottontail now. We realized we could not release her at about…[Read more]

Yes, and I can’t recommend highly enough this technique: https://binkybunny.com/forums/topic/presspressclip-nail-trim-technique/  It was a game changer for my bunnies and me!  I used to pay a local bunny shelter worker to come over and clip their nails before I found this technique.  It’s much more calming for both me and the buns because we kn…[Read more]

I agree with Dana, the main routes of transfer seems to be via insects (mosquitos and ticks, but also common flies), contact with carcasses of infected animals, and contact with feces and urine from infected rabbits.

When RVHD2 was new here (I’m in Europe) and we didnt yet have a vaccine, I took care to only feed my buns leaves from trees (apple,…[Read more]

That’s wonderful you rescued your bunny and put so much into her vet care. 🙂 What a lucky bun!

I’ve used diatomaceous earth (food grade) for ants and aphids, and it’s safe to use around buns (as long as they aren’t inhaling the dust). Not sure if it would work for what you are thinking, but for an outbreak of aphids people will dust it on the…[Read more]

Aww what a beautiful boy! With his history, who knows. Sometimes I wonder if buns that are not weaned properly end up with chronic issues too.

Good point Hazel! I gave my buns a big salad before getting on the road for the day.

Hazel thats so frustrating! I agree with looking into feral cat orgs in your area. Sometimes they will give you traps to put out, then spay/neuter and release. Or just let Otis go after them…..(jk…. sorta)?

And Ellie we had a similar problem on the campus I did my MS at! The groundskeeping staff were feeding all these strays, and then got…[Read more]

Not silly questions at all! And also don’t worry too much, because all of this stuff is really guidelines, and it is very possible to bond bunnies in a range of circumstances. Some things just seem to make things go a bit easier.

You can start pre-bonding once he is healed from his surgery. Hormones in males will drop a long during the recovery…[Read more]

Oof, what a situation 🙁 Agree with LBJ, this is something for animal control. It’s not only gross that they leave their mess everywhere, such a population and their health problems are dangerous for both humans and pets.

We used to have the same problem on our campus where house cats went stray. They were fed by an old man who had studied there…[Read more]

Hazel- Ouch! That sounds like a tough situation. 🙁 I’ve never really had this exact problem, but I have had neighbors feed stray cats near me. When this happened, I didn’t really have any cats cross my propriety. This might have been because at the time I had three very territorial cats to keep them out. lol. But, I have had issues with my own…[Read more]

Hmm, it sounds like something has affected their bond then, because aggressive fur pulling isn’t normal in a bonded pair.

How long have they been bonded, and what did you do to bond them? Health issues in one bun can also cause issues sometimes.

How long have you been feeding just 2 tablespoons of pellets?

Young bunnies should usually have more (some people say unlimited up to a year old, but usually that’s a bit excessive), so if he’s been on that ration for a while then he might not be getting enough calories.

@kanin –  Too funny about the vacuum! Looks like the buns’ are resting after a long day’s work!  😛

Some pests like aphids can be dealt with with a few drops of dishwashing soap, a tablespoon or so of rubbing alcohol, plus a drop of vegetable oil in a liter of water. Use a spray bottle. For funghi, baking soda in water can have some effect. Slugs you pretty much have to remove manually.

I grow practically all greens and herbs in pallet collars,…[Read more]

Hazel – Do you have a feral cat organization in your area? There is one here and they have a neuter/spay and release program. It has really helped with the population issue. You could also try calling animal control and have them tell the neighbors not the feed the stray cats. Feeding stray cats causes a public health issue. For your own yard……[Read more]
