Hello all,
so I just got 2 new rabbits not too long ago. They are New Zealand rabbits both males. They get along fine and they also are decently friendly. They let me hold them and they also let me pet them but sometimes they are still nervous to let me touch or hold them. I’m wondering the best way to make them comfy in their new home and how t…[Read more]

Ok thank you guys. I’m very happy to hear I didn’t cause the death. He was eating the Same pellets I gave him so I guess he was sick. I felt pretty bad for him but now I have 2 more. They are both healthy and have been well. I have been feeding a lot of hay and very little pellets with some veggies for treats. Thanks for the help!

I’m very sorry this happened. 🙁
Although not the recommended type of pellet, the timothy pellets are probably what he was eating before you got him. So I’m going to guess that there was something else wrong. As Dana said, young bunnies are very susceptible to parasites like coccidia. It takes awhile to incubate, so it would make sense that you…[Read more]

Topical treatments are relatively inexpensive. But yes, you’ll probably want to be proactive and treat all your bunnies. Ear mites can be transferred by other materials, they don’t necessarily have to have direct contact.
It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but I agree that it looks like it could be ear mites. Regardless, I would not try to…[Read more]

LBJ10 replied to the topic Rabbit has fluid around lungs, looking for treatment options in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 2 years ago
My understanding is this this pleural effusion, not pneumonia. Pleural effusion is when fluid builds in the pleural space outside of the lungs. At least that is what it sounded like from your initial description and the medication that was prescribed.
How are things now? Has there been any improvement?

I’m very sorry for your loss of your bunny. 🙁 He was very young, so there are a lot of things that could have gone wrong. It’s possible he wasn’t weaned correctly or was taken from his mother too young. Large shifts in diet can also cause issues. He also could have had coccidea, a parasite which causes diarrhea and is often fatal in baby bunnies.…[Read more]

Hey, this is my first time on this so I’m sorry if I’m in the wrong category. I recently got a rabbit about 6 weeks of age and I didn’t really know much of anything. He was eating Timothy pellets and the store told me that’s all he needed. I fed him and kept it 1/4 cup per 3 pounds like I read. He was fine for 3 days and then the end of the 3rd…[Read more]

Sometimes they can have them and not have symptoms for a long time, or it could have come from the other buns, it’s very contagious.
No, the treatment is not expensive, they will likely have you just treat all of your buns with Revolution.
I am not a vet, so I’m not saying it’s 100% ear mites. Just saying it looks like it could be, so I wouldn’t…[Read more]

How would he get ear mites when he is an indoor bunny.
We have 2 other bunnies downstairs and completely away from him with no contact.
Is the treatment expensive

That looks like it could be the start of ear mites. It can be very painful so I would not recommend trying to remove anything. Best to wait till Friday and get the mite treatment from your vet. Standard treatments are topical ivermectin or selamectin based products, such as Revolution.

My Lionhead which is mixed with Rex has been scratching his ear and shaking his head afterwards but not for very long.
I just had his nails trimmed because they were really long so i thought he scratched himself too hard and hurt himself. When I gently pat behind that ear he acts like it hurts,
I took my flashlight from my phone today and…[Read more]

I am very sorry.
Since she’s gotten worse you should contact your vet. The furosemide dosage could be too low or the problem could be so grave that a diuretic like furosemide makes very little difference.
For any invasive procedure the odds are of course better if the rabbit is in reasonably good condition.

Her condition has worsened, and she doesn’t want to eat. I don’t know if that’s a side effect from all this. But I think I need more help deciding what to do. Do you think there’s a real risk of shock or something going wrong by draining the fluid as the vet does? IMO, she is not prone to such things and is typically my chiller rabbit.
This is…[Read more]

Glad they are back to normal! Girls def are more territorial towards other girls in my experience… it also could depend on the other bun’s spay status, etc. Lots of variables for sure!
I was mostly wondering if by cleaning you removed some of their scent, and then accidentally deposited some of the other bun’s scent, so maybe it seemed more…[Read more]
