LBJ10 replied to the topic Picky elderbun now eating less: If he's eating hay and oats, does he need CC? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 2 months ago

As long as the oats aren’t causing stomach issues/soft poops, I don’t see why he can’t have more. And force feeding him at this point seems a bit unnecessary. What you’re describing sounds like the normal aging process. They just stop wanting as much food and their body slowly shuts down. If it were me, I would just give him whatever he wants. If…[Read more]

I think you would be able to still feed them (pellets and/or veggies) morning and evening. If the exact time varies by an hour or so, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Hay and water would be available 24/7, so they wouldn’t ever “starve”.

It’s best if you can get someone else to help hold him for you, while you do the cutting. You often only have to cut halfway into the mats, then the rest is often possible to disentagle with your fingers. You pull out the “dead” fur and leave the rest.

Thank you for the replies; everybody peanuts hair does grow back quickly because he is only a year old. When I cut the mats of how do I keep him still because he bites when I try to keep him still, and he also tucks his legs in

I’m not sure if I followed the timings correctly, but I think the main thing is that you wouldn’t want to routinely leave a bun (or pair) alone for 24 hours at a time (not saying that would be the case, I’m just confused by the shift schedule!). If illnesses (such as gastric stasis) aren’t caught in the first 12 hours they can become emergen…[Read more]

Thank you so much, LBJ.  I think we talked about this earlier and that does make sense.  And I do want to give him more oats and other things he likes now because I think that’s a privilege of being this old.  😉

But the fact that he went from eating like 70%-95% of his pellets/greens on average to almost none so suddenly makes me concerned it co…[Read more]

If you feel that this is best for you and your other rabbit, I say yes, you are making the right (but tough) decision! As long as she goes to a home where she is loved and wanted then go for it 😉

Hmm… reminds me of when my dog got old. She just stopped wanting to eat certain things. Near the end, all she wanted was plain cooked chicken. She didn’t want her dog food, etc. I often wondered if maybe nothing tasted good to her anymore. Could this be what Teddy is doing? Maybe pellets just don’t taste that great to him anymore. He’s still…[Read more]

I’ve had very good luck with azithromycin. People say it may lead to a reduced appetite, but that wasn’t my experience. This particular antibiotic is recommended for difficult to treat URIs.

My 2 year old rabbit suddenly stopped eating/drinking and pooping. Since last night, he’s been acting different – he isn’t as playful and spends hours just sitting in the corner of his cage He won’t touch his hay or pellets, and won’t even eat his favorite treats. He’s also not drinking his water, though I’ve been providing him fluids through a…

Thank you Bam! He is doing great! Very active, playful and he’s also eating very well. Called the vet today. He suggested that we switch to azithromicyn. Starting tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Any experience with it?

    Hey everyone!

So our beloved 12-year-old 3.5-pound Lionhead, Teddy, had been getting pickier and more variable with food over the past few months, but the last 2 days has nearly stopped eating pellets/greens, and we started subQ fluids last night (he already gets twice-daily meloxicam, cisapride, simethicone, and famotidine as part of the senior…[Read more]

Another thing you can do is take a wet cotton cloth and hang it on a part of the cage and put a fan facing it. This is almost a makeshift ac just of the bunnies. Just make sure there’s an area for the bunny to get away from this cold in case it’s too much. Also, you can make a snug-a-bun but with frozen water bottles. If you can’t do that then I…[Read more]

If you decide to go with a grated pan option make sure you check your rabbit’s feet a lot. Rabbits can develop sore hocks from stuff like grated pans. I honestly would use the hay option as it seems like the best option for the bunny.
