DanaNM replied to the topic Need help with bonding two bunnies, where one is being aggressive in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago
I think what you’re experiencing is pretty normal when bringing a new rabbit home (regarding the aggression at the barrier)! I think Wick hit it on the head with more pre-bonding, I have a few suggestions to add on to that.
When one rabbit is acting really territorial, it can help to set the new rabbit up right in the middle of the original…[Read more]

Hello!
I was hoping someone may have some advice to offer. I am beginning to bomd my resident bunny with a rescue. I have had some experience bonding so I am familiar with the steps to take but I am a little confused about some behaviour I am seeing.
I have began by some scent swapping and I am have had the bunnies in adjoining pens for an hour…[Read more]

Ohhhh the other thing my bunnies really like chewing cardboard egg cartons! I’ve heard it’s not hygienic to use ones that have had eggs in them, but you can order clean ones in bulk for cheap! You can also throw some pellets in them for an enriching toy. 🙂

I’m having a little trouble following, but mounting in bonding sessions is pretty normal. How long have you been doing sessions?
Also, some males can go through a hormonal fluctuation after neutering, and it takes several weeks for their hormones to drain after neutering. If you are still within 3 weeks since the most recent neuter, I would pause…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Can I introduce pellets and timothy hay at once? in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 10 months ago
Yes it’s fine to switch to timothy hay (or add it in), but since she is young I would keep her on the alfalfa pellets, as she needs a source of alfalfa to grow properly.
I am thinking once she starts eating more timothy her poops will get better. It’s not uncommon for young bunnies to leave some extra cecotropes because their pellets are more…[Read more]

I agree it sounds like it could have been a “gas attack”!
Whenever I suspect this I give a tummy rub and some simethicone. Also a “stern” talking to along the lines of “If you don’t perk up we are going to the vet! And we all know you don’t like the vet!”. LOL

You’ve been giving great advice so far! Just want to add that the standard practice for quarantining for RHDV is 14 days (our vet has said really 9 is sufficient and 14 is overkill, but we do it for added peace of mind).
Thank for being interested in rescuing this rabbit! At the rescue I volunteer at they will often use a few x-pens to corral…[Read more]

My 15 week old bunny had gas and was leaving cecotropes a while ago due to issues with her diet so I took away her pellets and she was only eating meadow hay for a couple of days. She got better but she was losing weight so I took her to the vet and was told to start giving her some alfalfa hay and maybe pellets if she tolerates it well. She…[Read more]

Depending on how bad the break is and where it’s at, a vet may recommend cage rest as opposed to a split or cast. As long as the bone remains somewhat stable, it should heal. As you hinted at, it will not be perfect. His leg may be a bit crooked or slightly shorter than the other. Rabbits are surprisingly adaptable though, so he would probably get…[Read more]

I’d give him a chance with cage rest, if he seems comfortable. By a dose for 8 kilos I’m guessing you mean an 8 kg dog? (Or is he a very big rabbit?) Rabbits metabolize metacam a lot quicker than dogs and cats, so they need a higher doser per kilo body weight.
Rabbits have good bone-healing capacity, unless the break occured due to bone…[Read more]

It’s possible for it to be longer. I’ve read they can shed spores for anywhere between a few days and all the way up to 6 weeks. Regardless, an infected rabbit is only contagious for a relatively short period of time. Shedding of spores is not a long-term thing.

Looking for advice,
My rabbit 6 years old has broken his femur very high up. He’s been to the vet, had xrays and we’ve been sent home with Metacam, giving him a 8kg dosage. The vet advised us to cage rest him with very limited movement, and give him a chance to heal at home. The break is in an area he assured me was well cushioned with muscle,…[Read more]

Thank you so much for this info!! I didn’t know that the spores were only shed for roughly 2 weeks. We met this bunny the first week of September and the farm owners said she’s been like that for a while, so that puts me at ease knowing the risk of spreading infection have declined by now.

No, rabbits do not “fake illness”.. they aren’t that smart, haha.
It is more likely your rabbit was feeling true gas discomfort and was able to pass it on her own. Sometimes, rabbits aren’t able to, so interventions like simethicone, getting the rabbit to move around, GI stimulant meds, etc. are needed. It’s great that she is eating again.

I might have to change the question now. Is it possible that rabbits fake illness for attention? I walked in with a syringe and her carrier to force feed critical care and now she is eating pellets and treats without an issue. I had three tests this past week and I couldn’t play with her for her “allotted” playtime of the day. Is it possible she…[Read more]

It could be gas. If it doesn’t resolve soon, then it could lead to stasis. Do you have any simethicone? Dosage for the 20mg suspension is 1cc every hour for the first 3 hours, then 1cc every 3 to 8 hours. You can also do tummy massages to help move the gas along. If she doesn’t start eating after a few hours, then she will likely need to see a vet.
