Potatomomma started the topic Scabs and fur loss under chin and top of ears in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 2 years, 9 months ago
I have a young little male lop who’s been suffering from crusty and bloody looking scabs under his chin and this causes fur loss. It waves where the scabs go away and come back in 2 weeks, then recently his ear tops started losing fur too and the tips of his ears are flaking like it’s dry. He’s been to the vet a handful of times and did a biops…[Read more]

I’ll look at it when he comes out again. He was letting me touch and pet him yesterday, including the ear, but now he’s being huffy again. I’m hoping it’s just because I woke him up or something.

Agrer with LBJ. If it is ear mites, you’ll see crusts forming on the inside of the ear, starting near the base and working their way upwards. If you remove a crust there will be bleeding, and the bun will react with pain. Revolution (selamectin) or ivermectin constitue the gold standard for treatment. Repeat treatment to eradicate larvae that were…[Read more]

She is 7 months. I’ve had many buns but she is youngest. Eating a huge amount of hay with a huge amount of energy and curiosity. I expect jumping to seat height level but she’s going much higher and only 2-3lbs. Zoomies and jumping takes precedent everything else, even pellets and treats.
I have a bun who broke his paw from jumping so…

Haha! Hardwood floors were “hot lava” in my house. It didn’t matter how “used” they were to the slippery floors, my boys didn’t like it. I had to buy an extra long runner that ran the entire length of the hallway. This allowed them to get from their room to the rug in the living room. Once the rug was there, they had absolutely no issues with…[Read more]

It could be ear mites, which are different. They start inside the ear and then work their way out. Sometimes you will see crusts along the edges of the ear during earlier stages, but it is less common. Ear mites can be extremely painful. Does the underside/inside look inflamed or irritated?

How old is she? Sometimes this is something bunnies grow out of naturally.

I agree with the others. It doesn’t sound like you’ve done anything wrong. Bunnies are individuals. They have their own personalities. Sometimes they just don’t like being pet or they don’t come to enjoy it until later in life.
As for his energy level, he is probably just living up to the “lazy lop” stereotype. My Holland didn’t do zoomies or…[Read more]

I agree that I don’t think you need to be concerned. Some buns just aren’t as social, and some take a really long time to warm up.
Since you have a good relationship around food with him, I wonder if you could incorporate some clicker training with him? You can use his pellet ration as “treats” to make him work for them a bit and provide some…[Read more]

Not sure if this has been suggested as I just skimmed the thread, but adding hides or her to move between in new areas also helps! You can add some rugs or blankets on the slippery areas, with some tunnels and hides throughout. My very shy bunny wouldn’t come out to explore until I added a cardboard maze for her. 🙂
But definitely agree with…[Read more]

Tip of the ear is not the most typical place for a mite-infestation to first appear. It more commonly manifests first between the shoulder blades and/or at the base of the tail. I think you could just keep an eye on this for now. If it spreads, if you see increasing amounts of skin flakes, if scabs (skin colored, difficult to see but easily…[Read more]

He isn’t itching it any more than he usually does. The flakes are on the very tip of his ear and there’s only a few of them. He is a Holland lop, yes.

I’m not really sure what I’m seeing on the picture. t could be cheyltiella mites or just dry skin. Scabies (mange) is rare in house rabbits. Mites are best treated with Revolution (spot-on selamectin) or ivermectin. PSA: Never use any compound containing fipronil (such as Frontline or Sentry) on a rabbit, it can be deadly.
It’s weird that he wont…[Read more]

This is my rabbit Milo’s ear. It’s only on his left ear but he’s been thumping at me every time I try to touch it or him since this morning. He had the flakes yesterday but didn’t mind me touching him at all. He’s eating and drinking and pooping pretty normally and he’s still running around. Is this scabies or mites of some kin…[Read more]
