I have 2 rabbits at home and they produce so much waste that paper bedding that I buy from Petsmart is getting expensive. What other alternatives are there that is more affordable?

My almost 3 year old lion head buck named Milo had an appointment to get neutered on December 12, 2022 & I overslept which was like a sign to not go but the office allowed me to still bring him in. As soon as he finished all his food I rushed out the door & after dropping him off I thought to myself that I wish I had spent more time with him…[Read more]

I see I haven’t used back to nature how well is it for odor control and what sized bags do they have? And how often do you change the litter box out of curiosity I was planning on changing the litter box 1-2 times a week for full dumping of the used bedding . As I have 3 bonded rabbits that will be using the same litter box I plan on getting a…[Read more]

As Bam said, it was listed as safe at one point. Some sites still list it and members on the forum have recommended it. However, there is still a risk in using it. One incident of licking zinc-containing cream may not do anything. It would depend on how much was ingested. The real concern is the bunny ingesting it repeatedly, since the zinc can…[Read more]

Agree that 28 days is standard. I do now of buns that have had to do another 28 day round. Bun Jovi’s first vet messed up his dosage so he actually had 28 days of a lower dose, then 28 days of the correct dose, and he did fine. I noticed improvements after a couple weeks.

There are some low-sided litter boxes out there now, he might appreciate that since he is making the effort to get into the box. Bun Jovi completely gave up trying to get into the box but he’s also 14. :p

Some vets keep buns on Panacur for 5 weeks, but 28 days is still standard treatment. Repeat treatment is common though, some say 9 days every 6 months for asymptomatic EC-buns, other vets prefers to do the whole 28 days if/when a known EC-bun has a relapse.

EC is an intracellular parasite. An EC flare-up means the parasites for some reason have…[Read more]

“EC causes host cells to burst and spill their contents, which elicits an inflammatory response from the immune system”

My god that sounds awful. I was going to ask how long it takes to see results so thank you for letting me know! Is there ever cases where they have to stay on it for more than 28 days or is that typically enough treatment? Als…[Read more]

Yes I gave the first dose to him right when you posted with some banana and surprisingly he ate it too, not sure how long that’ll last though lol. Also don’t know about the concentration but I at least trust them to get that right, I can call and confirm though. Unfortunately there are only 3 vets that see bunnies in my area and the other 2 I was…[Read more]

I’m glad you got fenbendazole for him.

Standard dose of fenbendazole for EC is 20 mg per kilo body weight and day, the appropriate dose can be calculated if the concentration is known. Here standard liquid fenbendazole suitable for rabbits has a strenght of 10%, which means 100 mg per milliliter. If you have the same strenght, the dose you’ve…[Read more]

I agree with LBJ10, I was curious about the dosages and length of medication. Fenbendazole is the best treatment we have for EC, but some rabbits even need a 2 month course at a 20mg/kg dose.

But the damage from the parasite is permanent, so it’s possible the nervous system will not recover. But as LBJ10 said, some of this is due to inflammation,…[Read more]

I mixed my Panacur with some mashed banana and Bun Jovi ate it no problem, so I would try that! If he really won’t eat it, I got the deworming paste for horses. It’s a bit harder to measure out but the concentration is the same so the dosing is the same.

Do you know what concentration they gave you? I think the default is usually 100 mg/mL. If…[Read more]

The problem with zinc would be with long term use. The bun could, over time, ingest too much zinc by licking the cream. Sudocreme used to be recommended by vets, but probably mostly for buns with wrapped feet. If the feet are wrapped, the bun obviously cant ingest the cream. You can use plain vaseline as a barrier cream.

When my bun got sore…[Read more]

Update: They gave me the one month of treatment. He weighs 6.7 pounds and his dosage is 0.6 ml once a day for 28 days, does this sound right? The vet was skeptical and told me it might be neurological and that “sometimes you just have to manage these things” and suggested he might just be older than we thought and a senior or something and tha…[Read more]

Hmm… how long were the courses of Fenbendazole? What was the dosage?

It is important to keep in mind that there is NO correlation with EC counts in the blood and symptoms (or lack there of). A rabbit with extremely high levels can be asymptomatic and a rabbit with low levels can have severe symptoms… or all variations in between. In other…[Read more]

I can’t say for sure what angry and irritated would look like, red means irritated to me, but perhaps not angry?

I have seen sudocrem recommended and discussed here (which has zinc oxide), so are we saying that’s not good? I appreciate the other suggestions, but both would be very difficult to manage right now. She has had other issues with…[Read more]

Hello everyone, I have had my rabbit Buddy for almost a year now. He is about a year old Netherland Dwarf and has been having seizures for about 5 months now. We noticed that he started having seizures so we brought him to our regular vet who then suggested we go to an animal exotics vet that is more specialized in rabbits. At the exotics vet they…[Read more]

Creams containing zinc oxide are not recommended because a bunny could potentially ingest it (by licking). Ointment has to be reapplied regularly, so a bunny could potentially ingest enough cause zinc poisoning. This is why it is best to avoid any creams that contain zinc oxide.

Can you provide us with more information? You said your bunny’s…[Read more]
