    Hi!

My baby bun, 3 months old, has mites. He;s been really itchy and I feel so bad for him he’s so young. Yesterday we went to pick up some advantage 2 kitten, as that’s what the breeder said she used on her other buns.

He’s a holland lop baby, so he’s super small.

What dosage would you recommend for him, and how am I supposed to check what…[Read more]

    Hi,

We’ve had a hell of a weekend with Nellie, she was eating fine at 11 am on Saturday and as of 12 pm stopped eating, we took her to the exotic who gave treatment, we monitored her at home for a few hours and her condition deteriorated, she was admited to the emergency hospital around 8pm and given aggressive IV as treatment… She pulled…[Read more]

    Hi all,

I’m looking to purchase hay in bulk, and am looking for storage solutions that are pleasing to the eye, lol.

I’m thinking plastic bins, I live in a super dry climate nowadays (desert portion of CA), so humidity isn’t an issue nor is sunlight as I plan to keep it indoors away from windows.

More specifically, I’m looking for bin…[Read more]

I agree with Bam, the dosage you were given is within the recommended range. I think you’re focusing too much on the total mg and not the mg/kg. And, as Bam pointed out, it’s also listed as bid-sid. This means you can give the dose once or twice per day. My guess is the vet wanted to be a little more aggressive since the risk of pneumonia is very…[Read more]

I had an elderbun who did get aspiration pneumonia after choking on a pellet. His non-rabbit vet refused to acknowledge the risk. He eventually did develop pneumonia and thank goodness a rabbit savvy vet was able to save him, but not until he was very ill.

The recommended dosage for meloxicam (metacam and other brand names) is also bid -sid. It…[Read more]

    Thanks for answering!

my concern was it’s twice a day which is 20mg x 2 which is 40mg for the 24 hours.

I found an old bottle of my other rabbit who was given 0.3ml (he was the same weight).

he was given this as a just in case he aspirated so he doesn’t get aspiration pneumonia. He choked on a piece of banana. We got it out but there’s alway…[Read more]

0.4 ml of Baytril 50 mg/ml yields 20 mg enrofloxacine. If your bun weighs 1.47 kg, it’s a dose of 13.6 mg enrofloxacine per kilo body weight.

    (50 ×0.4=20, 20/1.47= 13.6)

Medirabbit says this dose can be given once per day or twice per day (a “day” being 24 hours)

This would be within the recommended dosage which is, as you say 5-15 mg per kilo…[Read more]

Hey all just a quick question regarding baytril dosage.
Our bunny had a choking episode 1 night ago and we saw the vet in the am. We worried he aspirated so in prevention of pneumonia he got baytril (enrofloxacin) 50 mg/ml strength, 0.4ml twice a day. He weighs 1.47kg. So that’s works out to 20mg twice a day?
Does that sound right? I called the v…[Read more]

Metoclopramide should not be given if there is a suspected partial blockage. It should not be given without pain meds, because it’s painful when the intestines start to move (metoclopramide is a motility drug).

For a partial obstruction, a vet would give pain meds and aggressive fluid therapy, i e iv fluids. This is not something you can do at…[Read more]

As a general and very important precautions, you should never forcefeed a rabbit unless it’s definitely ruled out that they do not have bloat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVW6Rw5rZzo

If your rabbit does not have bloat, I would recommend force-feeding some CC if your rabbit has not eaten much hay and is only nibbling veggies. The mucous is…[Read more]

All essential oils are considered harmful, but peppermint oil is “less bad”. Especially is you dilute it with coconut oil. I would think that if you’re just using it in your room and your bunnies don’t have access, then it should be fine. The real danger comes from continuous exposure by breathing it in within a confined space. This is why you…[Read more]

Was he being treated for anything immediately prior to this? Antibiotics? Mucus is typically either a reaction to antibiotics or a sign of inflammation/irritation in the gut. Inflammation or irritation can be caused by any number of things and can also simply be the result of GI stasis itself.

Regardless, 37 hours with no poops is very worrisome.…[Read more]

Hi! I am having some serious issues with my rabbit and the vets, and I’m kind of at the end of my rope.

    The story:
my rabbit is male, amd he’s 8 years old.
He stopped eating at around 4am on Saturday. Throughout Saturday he only ate a little dill and some lettuce. He made 3-4 poops, covered in mucus. I took him to the vet who gave him…[Read more]

Hey, sorry I realised that I didn’t reply to this.

You’re reply was very helpful thanks for taking the time to reply! I tossed the willow to be on the safe side and bought them dried willow sticks instead – they aren’t as much of a fan of the very dried stuff though.

The corn grass is a fantastic idea! I plan to get a big tub / container and…[Read more]

    Hey!

It is spider season in the UK and I am horrendously arachnophobic, lots of spiders are getting into my house recently and I cant bare it.

I want to at least keep them out of my bedroom. I have some peppermint oil arriving today that I plan to spray all over the bedroom – suppose to be a good spider repellent. I know essential oils are bad…[Read more]

Hiya Azerane! Nice to see you! I’m glad to hear Apollo and Luna are still chugging along, even if it isn’t as well as they once did. One of the hardest things is adjusting to caring for an elderly pet and accepting that they just can’t do the stuff they used to be able to do.

Yes, you really shouldn’t bathe a bunny. There are a few extreme situations where one is warranted, of course, but the vast majority of the time a bath would do more harm than good. I agree with Bam that he could just have crappy fur that was the result of a crappy diet. It will take time for that fur to be replaced with healthier fur.

    As for the…[Read more]
