        Hello again

I’m not sure if you all remember me and boo as you have been such a great comfort and support to me through my rabbits illness over the last 2 years.

We are coming to the end and seem to only have days left. I’m having to consider euthanasia and I have never had to do it before and feel so unprepared.

I dont want to let her down and would appreciate any advice that anyone can give me.

I’m most worried that my vet cannot do home visits due to covid protocol and i will have to use another veterinarian to come to he home. As this is where she would want to be. But I’m concerned about which vets are equipped to deal with rabbit euthanasia and is there anything specific that I must make sure that they have or do?

Thanks again for your endless kindness over the years

        Jade

I am so sorry you are going through this. I am in the same boat with my 12yo girl, and it is torture.

What I did to prepare in my case, was googled places that did in-home euthenasia. I then called them all and asked if they were confident working with rabbits. – some vets said no, and others said absolutely!

I also asked if they had same day appointments in the case of an emergency.

I’m not sure where you’re located, or what the exact situation is, but I keep telling myself that it’s better to let go a little early than even a day too late.

If you are in an emergency situation, I would just start calling around. And it’s ok if you have to bring your bun into the vet vs having it done at home. We all just try our best in these situations, and your bun knows they are so loved.

Thanks so much for your reply. I’m caring for her by myself at the moment and I’ve been feeling very isolated. You’ve given me so much comfort.

Sorry your little one is also in this situation. Its terribly difficult. Boo is 11. She had advanced arthritis and potentially bone cancer, she cant walk now. Shes blind too and has had ongoing gut issues. So we know the time to let her go is very close.

I’ve taken your advice and made the difficult phone calls. I feel more prepared now and have found a company called cloud 9 that does home visits in a couple of days notice.

Thanks ever so much for your help

Sending you hugs and strength to get through your difficult time x

I had to say goodbye to my bun bun Vilde last summer. He had been battling with health problems for a long time and I had decided to let him go if he took a turn for the worse. Home euthanasia is not common here, but even if it had been, it wouldn’t have been an option due to the pandemic.

They injected him with a powerful sedative first. They should do that. Rabbits can otherwise seize and even cry out in their dying moments. That is something you absolutely will want to prevent, and nowadays rabbit vets should be aware and prepared for this, but you could still ask beforehand.

My bun fell asleep in my lap. It was peaceful. He had been such a fighter. It was the best thing I could do for him.

                  Hi Bam

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I know how difficult it is to recount. So thanks for your reply and not scrolling past. I’m sorry to hear about Vilde its a relief to hear that it was with you and peaceful.

I’m very scared as the only vets I can find that will perform the procedure dont always use sedation if the animals heart rate is too low as the euthanasia would take longer. I’m hoping this isnt an issue that I will encounter.

                  Thanks again

                  Jade
