My little brother fed my rabbit some cucumber but was not aware that it had worms. I only noticed when I looked at her food bowl and seen a piece of cucumber that had a bite, the center was brown and a worm was present. My brother gave her a few pieces but there was only one left when I saw it. What do I do?? Is it harmful for my rabbit? I’ve done my research and I think it was a pickle worm, are they dangerous? Please help me. I am literally crying my heart out because I am so worried that something might happen to her. Thank you.

Best case scenario is if she did ingest one, she chewed it to death or it’ll die in her stomach. I’m unsure the repercussions on that particular worm, but generally when we think of rabbits with “worms”, you see them in their poop. I would monitor her as usual and just make sure she keeps eating hay, drinking, pooping, and peeing. If there are any changes in her appetite, regular affect, or droppings, then it will be time to assess some potential medical intervention.

A little extra protein never hurt anyone. 😉

Seriously though, if it is a pickleworm then it is Lepidoptera. In other words, they are baby moths. They are not parasites to animals. The larva would not survive being eaten. I would be more concerned about a potentially spoiled cucumber.

I agree with them, but if you’re still concerned it never hurts to give the vet a quick call to set your mind at ease.
