Awww cute pumpkins Wick! We carved pumpkins too, and the squirrels have been eating mine! LOL
I dressed up as “Bonehilda” (a really random character from the Sims, she’s a skeleton maid), and my husband dressed as Elizabeth Holmes. ha!
Ahhh Suzanne hopefully they give you tasty meds that the buns will take willingly! Sometimes they can compound…[Read more]

Awww bummer about the nail! Don’t feel too bad, things happen.
The session before that sounded like it went ok! I’ve seen that behavior before, where one bun kind of pins themselves to the ground and the other will nip their side. I don’t really know how to interpret it, but I agree it’s better than full on fighting. Hopefully you can try another…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic One bunny grunting during bonding in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago
That doesn’t sound too bad! Grunting is pretty normal in bonding. Females are more territorial, so they will tend to show more of those types of behaviors in bonding.
How long have you been working with them?

DanaNM replied to the topic Excessive Mounting in the forum BONDING 4 years, 10 months ago
If you notice that things are worse at the beginning of the session and then calm down, then I think that longer sessions are the way to go, but you would want to do long sessions in the neutral space before moving them into their final home. It sounds like they are still just working things out, it’s normal to see both bunnies mount etc.
What’s…[Read more]

That sounds like great progress! I agree they are continuing to work things out. I would keep increasing the length of sessions as you can, but I don’t think they are quite ready to move to semi-neutral. Maybe you could have them on the bathroom floor as opposed to the tub if that would be more comfortable?

Just confirming that she is spayed?? You may want to double check with the shelter and have them pull her spay records, because mistakes can happen!
I agree that the scent of another rabbit in the area who she isn’t bonded with might be upsetting. To me she sounds “cage aggressive”, although I know she isn’t locked in a cage, she could have been…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic bunny won’t stop peeing on bed in the forum BEHAVIOR 4 years, 10 months ago
Beds are a problem for a lot of bunnies! Can you get a taller barricade? That might be the easiest thing honestly.
The other solution I’ve seen (but have not tried), is to get a plastic shower curtain and put it on top of the bed under a thin blanket or sheet. The plastic blocks the smell of the bed (which triggers marking), and also makes clean…[Read more]

Ooh that’s great! I do think there is an element of competition! I’ve noticed this in my pairs too, eating is a very social activity for rabbits!

For extra special treats, mine love a small bit of apple, a raisin, or a cheerio (or rolled oat). 🙂
I also give mine the oxbow joint support treats and they like them!

DanaNM replied to the topic Pet Insurance in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 10 months ago
I’ve looked into it, and with all of my pets it was just too expensive based on the coverage they would provide. I used to carry it when I just had 1 bunny and my cat, and the one time my cat got sick the illness wasn’t covered, so I cancelled it! Last I checked there was only 1 company in the US that covered rabbits (I think VPI? but they may…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Fussy Bunny 🐰 Hay substitute ideas please! in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 10 months ago
I think you hit it on the head with his teeth. It’s not that he’s fussy, it’s just that his mouth hurts.
I think you will need to schedule regular filings to see if you can get his teeth back on track. He may never wear them down properly if they are misaligned, but if they are filed properly he should be able to eat his hay more easily.
If…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Recurrent GI Stasis Underlying Condition? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 4 years, 10 months ago
Your description of the rapid onset and cycles really does sound like a congenital condition as opposed to something like liver torsion. I had a foster who we think had cowpile/megacolon and/or cecal dysautonomia. These are thought to be similar to lethal overo white syndrome in horses. It basically seemed like his nervous system was not…[Read more]

Second what Bam said! My bridge bunny Bertha seemed to respond well to Myristol, it’s a joint supplement originally made for horses, but they have a rabbit formula now. My current senior Bun Jovi (who is also almost 13) doesn’t like it though!
I’ve given both the Oxbow joint support and the Sherwood joint support. I think they sort of help? They…[Read more]

Is that a picture of their enclosure on the right? If so, it is is not safe for them. Chicken wire does not keep predators out, they can rip or chew through it. Also, if you are in an area with RHDV2 (see the pinned post about this), housing outside is dangerous if they aren’t vaccinated. There are some examples of safe and appropriate outdoor…[Read more]

Bam replied to the topic Bunny issues with petting + grooming in the forum BEHAVIOR 4 years, 10 months ago
I agree with Moonshadow. Baby buns are a lot like puppies. They have a very short attention span and little patience for cuddles and toys. My bun who turns 6 months tomorrow only last week decided to really relax next to the human and be pet for more than a few seconds.

Bam replied to the topic Type of hay? in the forum DIET & CARE 4 years, 10 months ago
Thats a very typical dandelion seed head. I dont know if the seeds are rich, but they’re not toxic. Children should avoid eating dandelion stems, I just read, but it seemrs a bit unlikely that children would want to, since the taste is bitter. I know of many rabbits (including my own) that love the stems. (As with practically everything else, if…[Read more]

Hello, I have 2 bunnies. A 1.5 year old netherland dwarf male (Winston) and a 11 month old dwarf/lop female (Pip) Both are fixed and I have had the female since she was 8 weeks and the male for the last 6 months. They bonded well and in general are friendly. We recently moved in with my partner and discovered he is fairly allergic to them and…[Read more]
