To make the car ride as low stress as possible, she should be in a carrier that she can’t slide around in – you can roll up fleece blankets or towels arrange them along the carrier walls so she sits in a little “nest” for the ride. Put some hay and nice fragrant fresh herbs in the carrier – even if she doesn’t eat, rabbits like the scent of…[Read more]

@DanaNM, Thank you for the reply!
Muffin got better it about 4-5 days, he’s now eating and drinking on his own, and back to his usual self. He does not have sludge anymore. However, we are back to square one with his initial problem – I need to keep him in one zone and wash his blankets, as he keeps peeing and marking. He does not dribble urine…[Read more]

yes, i asked him some questions about rabbits and he knew that they have to eat up until surgery and he also told me about the risk of cancer and how the surgery may help with her being destructive and aggressive. the only thing he said that worried me was the way he told me about the risk but other than that he seemed like a great vet and…[Read more]

Yes, this it the same bun! I think the poops were varying sizes because of the GI upset. I gave him the first dose tonight and I just hid it in a ball of critical care!

Yes, your initial post did make it sound like the vet was not confident in performing the surgery. That is definitely a red flag. If the vet was simply trying to inform you of the risk (and yes, there is a risk there… it’s small, but a little higher than cats/dogs) then perhaps it is OK. It just seems like a really weird way to say it. Are you…[Read more]

Is this the same rabbit from your other thread? I thought the concern was this small poops.
Yes, sometimes bunnies can recover from a yeast overgrowth with a “bland” diet (i.e. hay only). That being said, I don’t think the medication will hurt anything and it might help speed things along. Anti-fungals tend to not taste very good though, so I…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Diffuser and incense in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 4 years, 7 months ago
It’s not recommended. Many essential oils are not safe for rabbits as they can build up in their systems. Rabbits have very sensitive respiratory systems, so incense would likely be irritating to them.
I think if the incense was burned a while ago and the room had aired out (so just a faint smell remaining), that would probably be OK.

DanaNM replied to the topic Bad GI Stasis?? Or another surgery needed?? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 4 years, 7 months ago
I agree with LBJ10, I would not give up yet or jump to extreme treatments just yet.
I always go back to this article: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html
Especially this bit:
“It is essential that the caretaker faced with a rabbit in GI stasis be patient, allowing the treatments and medications to work. Rabbits are easily stressed, and…[Read more]

Is it safe to burn incense or put essential oils in a diffuser with my rabbit in the room? Would it helped if I opened a window or cut on a fan? Or can I allow him in a room that has HAD incense burnt in it (the smoke has gone out and only the smell remains)

Endive and cilantro are low calcium options. 🙂
Romaine lettuce is also good and usually well-tolerated.
Here’s a chart from an older article about rabbit nutrition with calcium content of various foods (most of the super low calcium things are fruits):

Poor Muffin! What an ordeal!
I do think his bladder (and soreness from having it expressed) could be at least partially to blame for the peeing. There could be some small crystals that ended up in his urethra that are causing him to dribble urine for some reason. Since a lot of the sludge was removed, hopefully things will improve a bit more.…[Read more]

Most rabbits do better in the car than we expect them too. They usually just settle down and rest, especially if it’s freeway driving. You can put familiar smelling blankets in the carrier for her, and I think she will be just fine.
I agree that the vet was probably just trying to give very “informed consent”, but maybe that came across in a way…[Read more]

Thank you! I honestly think that I’m way more worried about this than I need to be, the specialist did not seem concerned at all and seemed to think that he would be good as new in no time!
