I’ve tried to look it up but I can’t see anything listed since 2019, not sure if I’m looking in the right place though. I live in solihull, UK. is there a specific site that maps cases? we asked the vet and they just said probably something viral but we don’t know and gave us no indication whatsoever.
I wonder if he got it from the vets, but I’m…[Read more]

Most the time they don’t need anything like a cone or recovery suit just pain meds ( if given some give it for boys and some don’t ). I don’t think it is needed for boys because they normally get a longer lasting pain med when their there. Unless they are in obvious pain. For boys the age to neuter is between 4-6 months but it also depends on th…[Read more]

I’m very sorry for your loss too. I hope Peachy will be fine.
Many things can happen with rabbits even if they’re kept in excellent conditions.
Frances Harcourt-Brown, author of the first edition of the Textbook of Rabbit Medicine, lists several causes of sudden death in rabbits. Here is a link to her web page where she writes about sudden…[Read more]

@Wolfgang, I believe you are misinformed about RHDV2 diagnosis and the working mechanism of PCR tests. They do not create something out of nothing, and rabbits do not naturally carry the RHDV virus in any form.
RHDV2 causes rapid death and has extremely high mortality in wild and domestic rabbits (between 60-100% mortality has been observed in…[Read more]

My rabbits are indoors, the wild rabbit population has declined drastically in my immediate vicinity over the past several years, but that probably has more to do with the building of one new subdivision after another than any other factors. My cat does go outside, but only inside a play tunnel, wild birds consist of mostly doves and finches, they…[Read more]

Have you considered or researched comfrey I buy it dried for tea and use it to treat everything either by soaking it or making a compress and I’ve read its very useful and safe for rabbits. I’m suggesting it because it heals broken bones and soft tissues in unbelievably record times. I’m noted for BAD ankle sprains usually with torn lig…[Read more]

OMG I’m so sorry, how awful 🙁
This really sounds like RHDV should be suspected with the sequence of events and timing. It causes internal hemorrhage so blood around the nose is one of the only signs, aside from sudden death. It is so incredibly contagious and can be tracked in on shoes, feed, etc. Are you located in an outbreak area or near one?

I’m very sorry to hear that, but maloclusion does not typically mean a bunny needs to be PTS. Many buns with severe maloclusion have their incisors extracted and do well. Is your vet experienced with rabbit dentals? It may be time to get a second opinion if not.

The age guidelines the rescue I volunteered at went off of were minimum 4 months, so usually between 4-6 months on avg. Vets will vary a bit on what they prefer to do. Males can be neutered as soon as their testicles have dropped, but if they are very small (or a very large breed) the vet may want to wait till they are older.
I agree a recovery…[Read more]

Bam replied to the topic Sudden aggression: do rabbits react to a woman's cycle? in the forum BEHAVIOR 4 years, 6 months ago
I have never experienced this, but it doesn’t seem unlikely. Rabbits have a very acute sense of smell. A classic way of deterring roe deer and wild rabbits from your flowerbeds is to sprinkle blood meal around the plants. I’ve never used that method myself though, so I don’t know if it works.

I’d say the requirements differ from vet to vet when it comes to boys. Some won’t neuter anybunny under 6 months. For a girl, most vets want the bun to be at least 6 months, because before that the structures they’re removing are so tiny they can be difficult to find without poking around too much.
You can still ask for a painkiller to give at…[Read more]

Update: the vet said we might have to put him down as he has a severe case of maloclusion (birth defect – not covered by insurance) and will require at best two-weekly filings (taking a full anaesthesia each time which will damage his health longer term). We did one filing now and will see how it goes the next two weeks but chances of keeping the…[Read more]

Okay, thanks! This is all really interesting and helps a lot. I was also looking at those soft pet cones that look like toasts, strawberries etc. I’ve never got a bun spayed/neutered before so I just want to be as careful as possible. I didn’t know that they don’t send pain medications home with boy buns, actually. Also, what is the minimum weight…[Read more]

One of my bunnies won’t let you touch him, he runs for treats and jumps on us and all, it’s just the way he is. My other bunny only lets things on her terms and will lunge and nip if she doesn’t want to be pet, and forget about being picked up. My bunnies aren’t afraid of me, it’s just the way they are. You could maybe try hand feeding them…[Read more]

I agree with Glenn, most buns do fine without anything, especially boy buns. A neuter of a young healthy boy is a minimally invasive and quick procedure.
That said, I did ask my (rabbit savvy) vet before I had my girl bun neutered last October. She said a suit is a lot better than a cone. Rabbits hate cones, and if you have to use one, it’s…[Read more]

We adopted a bonded brother/sister pair 1 year ago. They are about 2.5 years old. Spayed and neutered. There are only two quiet hoomans in the house, no kids or other pets. They have a large 4 x 8 foot pen and are spoiled with first cut hay, occasional alfalfa, with fresh greens and pellets provided twice daily. They have lots of full house run…[Read more]

3 months seems pretty young to me but I think it actually depends on size, there is a minimum weight which I can’t remember now but my bun was not neutered till about 7 months old because he simply did not weigh enough.
As for recovery, a lot of buns are fine with nothing, mine were. My first thought about a recovery suit would be to check if its…[Read more]

I was wondering if recovery suits are safer and less stressful to use than cones after surgery. I want to get my boy bun neutered, and so I want it to be less stressful as possible, while helping him to make a quick recovery. Are recovery suits safe to use? Does anyone have any advice? ♡
