The use of probiotics for rabbits is controversial, but there are no known adverse effects and they’re not possible to overdose unintentionally. Molly Varga (British rabbit vet and author of the 2nd edition of The Textbook of Rabbit Medicine) says they’re safe to give. Any unused surplus just gets pooped out.

    Probiotics containing saccaromyces…[Read more]

No experience with Protexin (and also not Australian!), but generally there is no harm in trying a probiotic (if it is indeed a probiotic). You are correct that there are those in the veterinary field who do not see benefit or directly probiotic effects from giving the available probiotics to rabbits due to lack of research/empirical support, that…[Read more]

Hi all, any Australian bunny owners used Protexin probiotics for their bunnies? Looking for feedback on whether it worked or not. Any side effects?

I’ve head some exotics vet say probiotics don’t do anything for rabbits but this exotic vet I went to gave Protexin to manage soft poop, excess cecotropes and a bun prone to stasis/ gas/ reduced…[Read more]

Thank you Dana, I did reach out to Dr. Dana Krempels a  little while back but no reply as of yet. I did however receive a reply from Esther Van Praag of Medi Rabbit who I had reached out to as well. She is more or less with the same belief as I am that Milo did indeed have facial paralysis present, the bacteria from his nose causing his snuffles…[Read more]

Agreed that cushioning may help. Joann Fabrics has become my friend because I recently learned you can not only purchase bulk fleece there, but also large cuts of memory foam! From Wick’s enclosure, I know that Sheepette will cling beautiful to memory foam — I use 0.5in height for Wick. If you lay either fleece or Sheepette on top, it will 100%…[Read more]

Yes! A binky is an expression of energy and is often facilitated by being somewhere novel, has good traction, and is just generally enjoyable and engaging for rabbits.

    Hello!

I have had one rabbit for about a month and a half now — a neutered 9lb New Zealand-Flemish Giant mix (Gideon). I decided to get him a friend, and adopted her just yesterday (Tess). I’m not sure her breed, but she’s a spayed 3.5lb bun whose parents and siblings appear to be American, though she has rex-like fur. They’re both 8 months old,…[Read more]

What’s underneath? If the floor is hard, perhaps she just needs some cushion under there.

There are plenty of perfectly happy solo buns out there. That being said, a lot of bunnies do like having a friend. Since you are limited on the time you can actually spend with her, I don’t see why getting her a friend would be a bad idea.

If you do decide to get her a friend, it might be better to look for a young adult. She may not appreciate…[Read more]

Thank you! I’ve raised the bed and he no longer seems confident that he can jump up on it, so at least as of now it looks like blocking off the bed has worked out really well!

    Hello fellow bunny lovers,

I would greatly appreciate your advice and opinions. Please excuse me if I ask a silly question or have posted in the wrong spot – I think this is the best place for my question, but I’m happy to reorganize if necessary.

My female Holland Lop was born at the end of August, 2021, so she’s just slightly over 6 months old…[Read more]

How is your bun doing now?

I’m not sure if I interpret the picture correctly, but it looks like there is a sore, not just a bruise? Does she live with any other rabbits? If so, they could perhaps have had a fight.

If the sore is shallow and the bun seems unbothered (eats drinks poops pees, normal activity level etc), you just have to keep the…[Read more]

Thanks Dana! He’s eating fine, though he wasn’t as into food as for dinner, hay consumption and poops all good. Maybe it is a bit of spring craze, he’s just not his usual self. I may give today a break. I have a lot of work as well and as long as it’s not setting things back it might be less stress all around.

Boring is good! Resting near each other is also great. I think you can ease off petting and interacting with them so much and see how it goes (but don’t be afraid to intervene if they get tense).

As for Dorian being moody, bonding is pretty stressful for bunnies, even when it’s going well. Most animals get a bit stressed with any routine…[Read more]

Just came back from the vet after another episode  with one of my buns. They were at the vet overnight. Did x-rays, bloodworks, teeth check and everything and it all came back fine. Which is great news on one hand but I’m still stumped why yesterday he was showing signs of pain and not taking food. I’m so exhausted and upset they are having to…[Read more]
