You definitely do not need to apologize for posting — that’s what the forum is for!

My experience is that the only US pet insurance for rabbits is through Nationwide; however, there are very little things that they cover so the overall generalization is that it’s not worth it.

While not conclusive, internal bleeding is another symptom of RHDV, the H stands for haemorrhagic, they literally bleed to death. There are other causes of course but it is concerning.

On the chance it is RHDV, I think it can survive in the environment for several months. Though I would have to double check the exact figure. In which case even…[Read more]

Greens would not be the problem. I was wondering about the hay because it is possible that hay could contain the odd toxic plant. It wouldn’t matter with big animals like horses, and rabbits tend to pick and choose between the individual pieces when they eat hay, so the risk would be slight, but still I thought I’d ask.

It doesnt seem likely that…[Read more]

I see. We don’t use cedar or wood bedding. The litter they have is pelleted paper, and we just used fleece blankets for Bonnie and Fleur’s bedding, cardboard for Gandalf because he was a chewer.

Would the kind of greens I’ve been feeding be an issue? I usually fed cilantro since it’s cheap and as far as I read it sounded safe, but I’ve also…[Read more]

My other concern is that I have 3 cats and I’m not sure if one of them could have opened the door to the bathroom, which would mean that they would have had access to my bunny. I know that cat bites can be deadly to rabbits, so I am concerned about this. I cannot see any visible bites or scratches on him. Should I just continue to monitor him f…[Read more]

Thanks everyone! He seems okay now, which makes me feel better. I’ll change his litter box so I can monitor his output and I’ll keep a close eye on him tonight and tomorrow. I hope he’s okay.

Push hay and water. That means serve fresh hay (hay gets old in 15 minutes if you ask the average bun), preferably in little piles around his area. If he eats more if you handfeed hay, handfeed him hay.  If he gets fresh greens, serve them freshly rinsed and dripping wet. Empty the litterbox and refill will new bedding so you can keep track of…[Read more]

I don’t see anything missing, but there were a few cotton rounds on the floor near my trash can- so I’m very concerned that he could have eaten one of those off of the floor. He just ate a bunch of hay and passed normal fecal pellets in his litter box.

Is anything actually missing? So far, it sounds like the only thing you found was a chewed plastic container. The good thing about rabbits is they tend to chew things thoroughly. So if he ate something, like plastic, it will likely just pass through his system. You can help by encouraging him to eat hay and drink water. If there isn’t a problem…[Read more]

Hi everyone. My rabbit is completely free roam in my bedroom while I am at work all day for 12 hours. There is a bathroom attached to my bedroom and the door remains closed at all times so that he does not have access to it. I just got home from my 12 hour shift and the door to the bathroom was open. I have no idea how this happened, but this…[Read more]

Rabbits are sensitive to phenols and phenolic compounds. Their livers cannot process them properly. As Bam said, they are found in plants. They can be toxic if ingested in large amounts (e.g. oak leaves). Some can also take on a gaseous form and can become toxic if inhaled in concentrated amounts over a long period of time (e.g. cedar oils found…[Read more]

Sorry to post so much lately but I have a question, is there a pet insurance in the USA? I saw a commercial for pumpkin dog and cat insurance on TV earlier and I see dog and cat insurance everywhere but is there one for bunnies?

Phenolic compounds can be found in a varity of plants. They’re plant “poisons”- beneficial in small moderate amounts but potentially toxic over time in considerable amounts. Many of them are highly beneficial in moderate amounts.

A very low temp “just” means the rabbit has gone into medical chock, which is only in rare cases possible to reverse.…[Read more]

It’s great that he’s had hay! That makes it less likely that he’ll have overgrown tooth roots at this adult, but still young age.

I think it’s very wise of you to take things slow with him. He’s had quite enough stress in lis life until you came and saved him 🙂

You can use baby wipes on a rabbit, but I’d avoid wiping the sore hocks. If you…[Read more]
