Hmm, it does look like a sore hock starting to form to me. A callus is usually right on the end of the heel. The other option could be a hay splinter, as Bam suggested. My bridge bunny Bertha got a sore on their hock that ended up being a tiny abscess from a splinter.

At this point it doesn’t look too bad though. I would focus by making the…[Read more]

Ah, gotcha! Yeah I think the foraging mat is probably good but may restrict it to just one serving a day and see how that goes?

The placement of the bare patch is a bit unusual. Sore hocks/calluses are a result of friction, so unless your bun has some sort of disability that makes her put pressure on the side of her foot when she walks/hops, this seems like sth else. Could she have done it to herself? Perhaps in an attempt at removing a piece of stuck hay? Some bits of hay…[Read more]

Hello! I’m sorry for yet another “callus or sore hock” post; I know y’all see a lot of those—but I’m so worried about my bun and I had to check! I’m gonna take her to the vet this weekend, but I’d really appreciate your feedback before I go!

I just noticed this naked patch of skin on the side of my bun (Leila’s) foot. I’ve never heard of a ca…[Read more]

Rabbits as a rule do very well in pairs, but they need to be introduced to each other gradually. This is known as a bonding process. Both rabbits should be neutered and given time to heal before the bonding process is begun, but you can start pre-bonding earlier. A female + male bond is statistically the easiest to achieve and the most stable over…[Read more]

Technically, EC spores can exist in the environment for a long time. Can a rabbit actually become infected this way? Much less likely than, say, a rabbit actually living with another rabbit that is actively shedding spores in their urine. At any rate, I wouldn’t worry too much about him becoming “reinfected”. Treatment for EC doesn’t necessarily…[Read more]

Ah maybe you’re onto something.. I said “treats” but really it’s just normal pellets (oxbow) that they go nuts over. I sprinkle about a tablespoon or so in their foraging mat a few times a day. I could try to adhere to a stricter feeding schedule for the pellets, maybe just once a day after their breakfast salad. I usually also give them actual…[Read more]

    Ahh that’s too bad. 🙁

The aggression around petting is concerning, but it’s good that it doesn’t escalate and she has a safe hide to retreat to. Just to cover all the bases, have there been any changes in your household or any changes in the bun’s health?

I’ve never heard of this happening around training, but I’m wondering if perhaps he could…[Read more]

Hi again. Just wanted to update this. The problem has unfortunately been getting worse. I stopped with the training since it was stressing me out, and found a “safe” way to give them treats together. I found that if they are foraging together, he is not as aggressive and they can both get treats.

Lately he has also been aggressive towards her…[Read more]

I agree with Bam! Rabbits are “crepuscular” by nature, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. When I had to share a room with my buns I swapped out their toys for “quiet toys” for overngiht  (such as grass or paper mats and twigs, baskets, etc) and gave them the louder toys (cardboard boxes, palm plates) during the day when I was at…[Read more]

Yes fruits and things like carrot should be very rare and a small piece. If it’s very yummy, it will still be very rewarding to them even if it’s only a small piece. 🙂  I really only give my buns fruit as a very special treat, such as after a nail trim.

He didn’t seem too upset about the hair dryer itself, it was more the fact that I had to touch his bum so much to floof up the fur to help it dry more quickly (he hated having his bum touch). They were stressful times tbh, but it fell under the “tough love” category that sometimes happens with pet care.

I had to do them often with him so I got…[Read more]

There really isn’t a way to deal with spores in the environment, unfortunately. I’m not actually sure how long they last in the environment though. The best you can do is be on alert for a relapse of symptoms. It’s not uncommon for EC buns to need another round of treatment occasionally.

Fingers crossed he does well with the new antibiotic!

With my dydbiosis bun Bam, I pretty much used the method in the HowCast video in Dana’s post, with 2 differences:

    1) I had the litterbox/wash basin on the floor, in the bathroom. If the bun decides to hop out of the bath, it wont be a big drop to the floor. Plus inside the bathroom any mess that might occur will be manageable. 2) I let Bam…[Read more]

I didn’t use the hair dryer. He was way too upset. I just dried him with towels as best I could but his poor little legs were so wet.
