Hay cubes can replace some hay, but its not generally recommended to substitute all hay with hay cubes. If your buns get a lot of daily porch time, maybe they could have loose hay on the porch and hay cubes indoors? Buy a small pack of cubes first to see if they like them, some buns just wont eat them.
I have a screened-in porch that my buns love…[Read more]

Please do report back! It’s not like he’ll immediately fatten up from such a small daily amount, but it could help him maintain muscle mass, plus provide him with good energy. Oats seem to give rabbits more energy than the “worth” in calories. And activity is o c good for muscles, circulation and the GI system.

Two suggestions would be switching to SPS Orchard Hay (anecdotally I find it less irritating than Oxbow’s Orchard) and potentially mixing in some Oat hay which is still hay fiber, but just not normally recommended as a main hay source. Oat hay is definitely low on dust though, so it could be a good filler that’s still hay.

Okay so if I understand correctly I can get the compressed hay cubes instead of the regular hay? I use Oxbow orchard grass hay.
im giving it til mid July and if my daughter still has allergies then I’ll put my bunnies back on my screened in porch.

Maybe start with a teaspoon once or twice daily? He is a rather big rabbit, my rabbit was tiny. But since he was a solo bun (couldnt be neutered due to his health issues), and had a tiny appetite, I could free feed him, so he always had a small bowl with oats available. As for sunflower seeds I gave like a pinch per day. I also tried almond…[Read more]

Ohh no I actually forgot about oats! How many of those and sunflower seeds do you think I should give him a day? I’d definitely rather try something that doesn’t cause excess calcium first.

Bit tricky if he already is prone to some sludge 😕. I’m assuming you have tried adding some rolled oats and or sunflower seeds to his diet? It was my go-to with my hard keeper elderbun who I had to struggle to keep over 1500 grams (roughly 1 lb). He also got some carrot every day, although not a lot because its obv sugary.

Hay should not be eliminated from a bun’s diet, because hay is prerty much vital for bun dental- and GI health. There are some things you can do though. I am allergic to timothy hay, and timothy seems to be the type of grass that most allergic people react to. I try not to have timothy hay in my bedroom (or I dry cough all night long). I tolerate…[Read more]

Hmm he has had problems with urine sludge/excess calcium in the urine in the very near past so that worries me a bit. I’ll start off with just mixing a little with his regular hay. He shares everything with his wife so I also have to worry about her calcium intake but she’s also considered a senior so hopefully she’ll be fine.

Alfalfa is recommended for some senior buns that hsve difficulty keeping weight on. The high protein content is good for old bunnies that to maintain their muscle mass. The thing that’s considered problematic about alfalfa for adult buns is the high calcium content. If you see very thick white pee residue as a result of the alfalfa you could…[Read more]

I brought my rabbits inside January 2023.
they live in my laundry room which also is off my daughters bedroom and playroom. I shut my daughters bedroom door during the day when my bunnies are out, at night they sleep in their cages but my daughter has to have her door open.
my daughter has recently developed seasonal allergies (stuffy nose and…[Read more]

Some buns do appreciate a cat tree, but deoending on which type you choose it might need some modifications in order to be bunny safe. Some buns are not interested in cat trees at all.
This is a very old thread, so I’m going to close it. Please feel free to start a new thread about cat trees, or on other bun topics!

I haven’t personally used a cat tree for rabbits, but I’ve heard of some bunny owners who have had success with it. Rabbits love to climb and explore, so providing them with a cat tree modified to suit their needs could be a great idea.

Hi all. Fresno, who we assume is a senior bunny and has arthritis (now on daily meloxicam for it), is having trouble gaining weight and keeping it on. I had to stop feeding him greens because it was upsetting his tummy and causing mushy poops. He seems to have a sensitive tummy in general. I just started him on Oxbow senior pellets so that might…[Read more]

I’m so sorry you had to deal with this with your cat, it’s truly the worst 💔💔 thank you for the kind words and the tip – I’ll definitely make sure to bug him with my constant recording, even more than I already do 😂❤️

That’s great! Glad to hear he is doing better. Keep in mind he is also 7 years old. Perhaps the stasis triggered other pains in his body, like arthritis pain. Does he have a litter box with a cut out side?
