Hey everyone,
So a little over a week ago my sister was out for a walk (in historic district pretty populated) and found an abandoned rabbit. Obviously she called me since I have rabbits. I brought him home and took him to the vet a few days later. He is perfectly healthy! But they said they couldn’t tell his breed or age but most likely he was…[Read more]

LBJ10 replied to the topic Do buns get dandruff? in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 2 years, 9 months ago
Yes, dandruff isn’t unusual when they are molting. The fur can fall out in chunks and it takes dead skin with it.

Thanks Bam! I really appreciate how quickly you put my worries to rest. She is molting a bit, and unlike Dorian her ears are fluffy and shedding so I will go with dandruff then. Especially since no yellow scabs like you mentioned for mites.

Yes, they are just too cute 🥰
Rabbits can get “dandruff”, esp when they molt. You can help by brushing the skin flakes off with a soft baby brush -if needed. The skin flakes you see in cx with fur mites are a) ample b) bigger c) come from white/yellow scabs that are very firmly attached to the skin. The bun will react with pain if you try to…[Read more]

I was doing a little defluffing of Miu and noticed a few scales on her ears, photo makes it look less as I suspect a grooming happens while I looked for my phone. I suspect it’s just dandruff, but since Dorian has none I wanted to check to be safe.
Also just spam photo since sometimes they are just too cute

The workings of the bunny GI system are extremely complex and fine-tuned. Your post reminded me of this great lecture from the House Rabbit Society:
It doesnt explain why exactly your bun is prone to gas, but it makes it quite clear just how immensely complicated the rabbit GI system is and how its pretty much…[Read more]

Well, there were definitely scuffles that might have been a fight if I wasn’t there 🙂 I ended up calling it off after 3 days. They seemed to start going downhill again, and the last night they woke me up scuffling and then I scared them and snoopy jumped about 5 feet so was pretty scared lol. I also noticed Snoopy had a big bald spot above his…[Read more]

I thought about that (maybe it’s an old scratch), he lived in a very small wire cage for a year-ish before I got him so something could’ve happened then. I am going to keep a close eye on it & make sure it doesn’t get worse!

Could he have had an old injury to his eye?

Yes Dana, I always wondered about non-genetic GI problems possibly being the result of a microbiome not getting properly established. Many rabbits are weaned too early and it probably isn’t unreasonable to say that many do not get an appropriate diet at a young age either.

My understanding is it’s either genetic or a result of disrupted microbiome (or possibly a solid microbiome never established, such as due to early weaning or poor diet as a baby).
I had a foster bun with hotot type markings that had very severe gas and cecal dysbiosis issues. The vet suspected a genetic condition related to the innervation of…[Read more]

I’m glad to hear things turned out OK. I’m sure it wasn’t any less stressful WHILE you were gone, but it’s good to know they were in good hands and I’ll bet you were relieved when you returned home.

Cataracts can be EC, age, or both. In a case where a bun is both old and has EC, it can be hard to assign them to one cause or the other. I would keep an eye out for other symptoms, such as excessive urination, head tilt, or hind leg weakness.

Peaches has a suspicious little red vein/mark on the white of his eye around the iris. I was wondering if this is a concern, I haven’t really looked closely at his eyes in a while. I have a short video from april of me examining his eyeballs (bc I thought he has grey/brown heterochromia lol) and I can see a faint redness in the same area but I…[Read more]

I too have had a bun with a sensitive stomach. He was like that always, but the seriousness fluctuated. He could have horrible bouts of sticky piop, I often had to give him butt baths. It didnt seem to affect him much in terms of appetite or energy, although when he was gassy he wouldnt eat of course. I sat up many nights with him in my lap, a…[Read more]
