DanaNM replied to the topic How are we preparing for emergencies? [First aid & handling evacuations] in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 8 months, 3 weeks ago
Definitely a good idea!
Some things I would add:
I like to keep a box or two of the Oxbow Hay “stacks” in my emergency kit. They are small and compact, so easy to grab in a hurry.
For first aid, I think having subcutaneous fluids and meloxicam is very useful. Fluids especially can be very imporant supportive care and are almost never…[Read more]

I have only used the hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket trick. One time when Bun Jovi was very ill I put the water bottle next to him and a light blanket loosely over the top of him and the bottle, it definitely helped him. I’ve seen these warming disks you can put in the microwave for the same purpose but the name escapes me!

I hope the bulb will work.
When my bun Vilde was very ill, he would go and lie next to a radiator. Tried to give him a warm waterbottle wrapped in a fluffy blanket instead – and he was offended. He only wanted that radiator. It didn’t look comfy, but what did I know, I was just a hoomin, hoomins know nothing 😄

I’m glad his doing better!
Rhinoliths could be seen on a CT probably on an x-ray too bc they’re mineralized, but his symptoms dont really fit, since he has clear snot and very little of it. The only remedy for rhinoliths is currently surgery to remove the stones, and he wouldn’t be a good candidate for that.
I think what you’re doing is pretty…[Read more]

Ok, just ordered 100W and light fixture. Hope that’s not too hot.
I have my space heater pointing into xpen at times as well as a warm water bottle but seems he doesn’t prefer to sit near them even though it’s clear when the entire room is warmer, and I’m sweating, he makes less noise.

Yes, I was told there are possibilities but he was too unstable for them (CT, another vet with the tiny scope, etc), older, plus he’s tiny <2lbs.
He is on nebulizer, antibiotics, nose drops, and opioid (less breathing noise when he’s calmer though not sure this is actually doing much for him), and his normal arthritis meds of gabapentin and…[Read more]

It is very difficult to see inside those tiny structures. It takes specisl equipment that’s not standard. LBJs suggestion of a nebulizer sounds like sth worth exploring. There are handheld devices. (You can also do a “steam chamber” of a carrier or box but that sounds a lot more stressful.)
Rabbits can get rhinoliths in their upper airways.…[Read more]

I have had luck with ceramic bulbs. They work like a heat lamp, but there is no light. It just emits heat. The trick is getting it so the target spot isn’t too hot and bunny can freely move away if they feel hot.

It could be that a mucus plug became dislodged and made it’s way to a spot where it is partially obstructing his airway. They could try to flush it, but this would be stressful too. Would using a nebulizer help soften things?

Has anyone made an home incubator of sorts?
Are there bunny appropriate heat lamps?
Too late for my current situation but would like to think about think for the future. I have a nebulizer box (box with hole cut out) and am currently, at times, putting bun in carrier, which is in a large trash bag, with space heater pointing into it and…[Read more]

Ooops not throat (I haven’t slept for a couple days nor really ate). It’s a breathing problem. Somewhere past the nose but where they cant really see because it’s too hard/small and you have to go up and over?

Bam replied to the topic Elder bun starts making noise in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 9 months ago
I’m very sorry.
You didnt cause this by trying to clip his nails. Something was going on. Difficulty swallowing is a very common problem in both very old buns and very old humans and he is very, very old. It can be sudden onset (like from a vascular stroke) or it can just come creeping as the muscles needed for swallowing get weaker and less good…[Read more]

He’s critical now. They say he has throat obstruction or something (can’t tell exactly what).
I attempted to cut his nails and the stress pushed him over.

I’ve only had baby buns once (we adopted a bun and didn’t know she was pregnant).
But, she pretty much took care of everything with them. Like LBJ said, just make sure mama buns are getting plenty of food and water.
Also, they won’t fuss over the babies the same way cats or dogs do. They will feed the babies only once or twice a day and usually…[Read more]

If mama is taking care of them, then you don’t need to do much except making sure she has enough to eat. She should be getting extra protein too (alfalfa). The link Wick provided has lots of good info about baby bunnies and how they grow.

I do not have direct experience, but hopefully this can provide some parameters and guidance: https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Baby_rabbits_(domestic)

Hey all! I was tapped as an emergency foster tonight for 2 mama bunnies and 16 babies (each has 8). They look like rex mixes. I have NO baby bunny experience besides my 2 geriatric bunnies that I’ve had since they were young. One set looks like they are a week old and the other set are hopping around and eating hay and pellets. They are currently…[Read more]
