Also make sure to ask the vet these questions. The receptionist is more likely to give inaccurate information, especially if the office has multiple vets that see different species. I had this happen to me. The receptionist gave the generic info you would receive for a dog or a cat. When I later questioned a vet tech about it, they were like “oh…[Read more]

It’s important to also remember that people are more likely to post online when something goes wrong than when something goes right. Questioning your vet is one of the best ways to gauge their experience, and you are definitely able to do so, even if the spay is coming up. At the end of the day, if you’re not comfortable with the particular vet,…[Read more]

Agreed that the stomach is an optional “boost” you can give a rabbit in molting assistance if you happen to have a rabbit who is agreeable to it… that is rarely the case! And also a “yes” to it being OK to give simethicone when there is no gas– I actually give simethicone as a rare treat depending on the treat supply. While string of pearl…[Read more]

Ok, thank you. I’m hoping to adopt from a shelter, and there are tons of rescues near me that save tons of baby buns as well, probably accidental litters that are abandoned. Louie is on the younger side, being under a year, so I’m looking at bunnies leaning towards the younger side so they can live long lives together. Many of the shelters near…[Read more]

I guess each bun has a specific zoomie track in their brain. I just made everything as safe as possible, and Louie can just continue his zoomies.

Thanks @DanaNM and @Hazel !
He’s still eating for sure. The dandelion has been a bit scarce around here, but will look to see if I can get him some more… have plenty of mint right now though so I’ll throw more of that in his dinner, he doesn’t like fennel that much but I’ll try again. Wish I could do one go, wouldn’t work for Dorian. His molt…[Read more]

Awesome thank you all for the help! Means a lot. I’ll just let the prebonding continue for a week or more and see where they are at before I do some stress tests. Hopefully after some stress tests I can try our first face to face in a neutral spot in a playpen I set up.

What a pain. 🙁
Since they claim the surgery is severely risky, I’m guessing they tried to talk you out of it because their death rate is quite high. Could be that’s the reason they charge so much, hoping people won’t want to pay that amount.

What a shame about Dorian’s glorious ears!

Agree with Dface, if at all possible it’s best to adopt an already spayed/neutered bun. But I think you mentioned in another thread that’s what you were planning on? Are you just exploring different options?
Either way, best to not let them interact until you are ready for bonding. It also isn’t totally necessary to do side swapping until after…[Read more]

If he didn’t fight when she mounted, that’s a good sign. And yes mounting is a dominance behavior. It can be hard to tell in the early stages who will end up being dominant, and often it’s best to just not worry about it. As long as there is no fighting, that’s a good thing.
Things can change though-out the bonding process and as one bun settles…[Read more]

I wouldn’t be too worried as long as he keeps eating. The only times Oscar has tummy issues is when he’s shedding and he gets gas. The Simethicone drops usually help very quickly. If you think Dorian might have some gas, go ahead and give him some. Simethicone doesn’t get absorbed by the body, so it certainly won’t do any harm.
As far as removing…[Read more]

I normally don’t worry about getting buns’ bellies. Figure they can handle that on their own and it would be very stressful to try. But my favorite thing currently are those sticky lint rollers. I don’t like wasting the sticky sheets but they work so well… and I really only use them during heavy molting time. Hand plucking is sometimes the best…[Read more]

Spaying is more invasive than neutering, and comes with risks like any surgery, but the risks of uterine cancer are far greater, as reproductive cancers are the number 1 cause of death in unspayed females (life expectancy is typically cut in half).
It is important to find a vet that is comfortable with the procedure. Spays used to be considered a…[Read more]

Sorry, I probably post questions on here too much 🤪 This is my first rabbit and I worry too much sometimes.
Anyways, Bernard is getting spayed next week and after doing some reading online, I seen quite a number of people saying their rabbit didn’t make it through the surgery. How safe is it to spay a rabbit? I’m guessing it depends on the vet but…[Read more] -

@Hazel yeah….that is kind of how I feel, except the vet talking me out of it was weird. Maybe they just weren’t comfortable with it.
They wanted to do the consult/exam in one appointment, the blood test in the other, and then the surgery in another appointment…stating it was “less stressful.” Yeah.
Any new vet I go to requires an exam…[Read more]

prince dorian the bun replied to the topic unsafe zoomies? in the forum BEHAVIOR 6 years, 3 months ago
Dorian has a decent zoom area, but when he does he seems to like to take the path of most resistance and is a bit like a pin ball. Moving things out of the way doesn’t help as he just adjust his path to include them again, he must go through all the tunnels and boxes and under the table and do sharp changes of directions he just never makes. I…[Read more]

Dorian is still molting, he is over the worst of it… the bad part is it’s now just really his bun bum and belly. I can not brush either of those areas, total no go zones. Also the furnator comb (I think i got the name right) just doesn’t work for his fluffy backside, it isn’t able to get in there. I do try and pluck as much as I can, but we are…[Read more]
