I made a snuffle mat for my bun of a black rubber shoe mat as the foundation grid. I aired it out for like a week on the balcony, because I wasn’t pleased with the smell. My bun doesnt have a cage though, so he isnt in contact with the mat 24/7. He has it on top of a cardboard box in my bedroom now.

If I had more room, I would adopt all the bunnies, but I live at home with my family, and my room, while it is large, doesn’t have room for a ton of bunnies. There are so many cuties at shelters (somewhat) near me, and I can’t wait until we find Louie a match!

@poopscoop12 Sorry I meant to say I would put it on top of my other layers of things like memory foam bath mats. Fleece might be okay as cushion but it might be more slippery, I’m not sure. Well, since the bunny will have it’s face near it all the time, I would think about whether it would bother you to be smelling it 24/7. I would give it another day or so to air out and then see what you think.

The cubes have hay that is in very short pieces that is super compressed into a hard block. The stacks are less compressed and have longer strands, so you could actually break up a stack and fluffy it up to be like normal hay (not saying you would do that though, as it would kind of defeat the purpose). The smell faded a bit after I used vinegar and water spray but I still smell it if I hold it up to my face. I could put them outside for a day maybe? Then clean them again when I bring them in. Is it okay if it just smells a little?

Thanks for the advice on the pellets. Hay cubes are going to be here soon. I will try the oxbow stacks too. Just curious – what’s the main difference between the stacks and cubes? I got the impression they were the same.

Hmmm, I would prob do both (air it out then cover it). If airing out doesn’t help I might return them. As a rule I wouldn’t want anything very strong smelling to use in a bunny area.

@Thorbunny It really is a great rescue! Unfortunately those are just the exercise pens so they do spend most of their time in a hutch, but we do the best we can!
