Oooooo….. a digging box.  what could I put in there for her to dig through?

Recent discovery, we started giving the buns palm plates to chew (they use them at the shelter and are very popular), and Bun Jovi has stopped chewing his litter box and digging in the floor!  It’s a miracle!

Agreed, sounds like it’s hormones kicking in. All bunnies love to be out of their cage, so that is normal. Some vets will neuter at 4 months if the bun is “dropped” and large enough, so if he is really showing a lot of hormonal behaviors (which it sounds like he is) you could look into a vet that will neuter earlier.

Romaine is a pretty widely known “super safe” veggie. If he’s able to eat a whole leaf now and has been constant at it for a week or so, I think you can go ahead and increase the amount.

Some bunnies just like to do this, and decide it is fun one day! You can get a litter box screen to prevent it. You can also provide a “digging box” to help satisfy that instinct.

It sounds like a neuter problem.  A lot of young buns will display these kinds of destructive behaviors and are usually fixed quite easily once they are spayed/neutered.

Is occasional and mild wetness around nose something to be concerned about? This is a dumb question, but the shelter wrote me again and said Snowball was doing a little better, and “was started on a treatment plan as the vets suspect he may have colic.”  When they say colic, are they really just saying that he has GI stasis (which I thought I already knew)?

Progress! You can serve his greens freshly rinsed and dripping wet to get more water in him – if he gets greens. You can add a few drops of unsweetened applejuice to his water to entice him to drink more- but serve plain water too in another bowl, because some rabbits refuse water that tastes “funny”.

You should avoid pine shavings (and cedar), but aspen shavings/chips are commonly used and safe. Pine pellets are also safe because the pelleting process removes the aromatic compounds in pine that cause issues. I use pine pellets sold as horse stall bedding, they are really affordable ($9 for 40 lb) and work great.

It’s definitely something to look into. All an x-ray will do though if give you confirmation. There isn’t a whole lot that can be done for tooth root problems. It’s mostly just supportive care.
