I agree with what the others are saying. It sounds like your cat just needs a bit more time. Just because she accepted a bunny before doesn’t mean she is going to instantaneously welcome this newcomer. This doesn’t mean she won’t eventually accept the bunny though.

Yes, I don’t see why it wouldn’t help, but I am definitely not a vet, so there may be a reason. You could also try cutting up his greens into smaller bits, I don’t know if that would help, if he would just put more in his mouth instead, but it may work.

Great, hopefully things calm down!
And of course we would love to see pictures of your new bun! 🙂

Thanks Dana!
I think we’ll stick with splitting up play time (for now) as you suggested. When we do let the bunny out when the cat is in the room, we’ll be watching very very closely!
And I had not heard of Feliway, but this stuff looks great! We’ll definitely order some if things don’t begin to improve.
Thanks again Hazel and Dana for the a…[Read more]

I second what Dana said about fresh twigs. My buns don’t care for pet store willow, but love willow that’s fresh or that I pick and dry myself.
I’ve been giving my buns a little bit of dried herbs almost everyday, I mix it into their hay of scatter it over their hay mats. They love it and it keeps them busy. I got mine as mixes from a local rabbit rescue.

I would prob wait until your cat isn’t hissing at bun before doing playtime together, and I would carefully supervise since your bun is still so young. I have a cat and bunnies as well, but he does occasionally act predatory towards them so I have always monitored carefully when I get a new bun. My cats behavior seems more dependent on how the…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic My rabbit soaks his chin after he drinks?? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 11 months ago
How deep is the water bowl? Sometimes providing a more shallow and wide bowl can help.
It can take bunnies some times to realize hay is food if they’ve never had it. What’s the rest of his diet like? If he’s only eating pellets, he won’t have an appetite for hay, but it’s important not to reduce his pellets too drastically because you don’t want…[Read more]

Thanks Hazel!
I was thinking the same thing about the reason for the hissing.
We haven’t let the bunny out of the cage with the cat in the same room (one exception, when the cat was sleeping). When we are holding our bunny our cat is sometimes interested, but nothing more, and sometimes goes and does her own thing.
I’m a bit worried about…[Read more]

I agree with Hazel, I think some more time will probably fix this since it’s only been 2 days.
You might allow the cat to thoroughly sniff the bun’s litter box (without the bun in it).
There is also a technique used on dogs when they are reactive to other dogs on leash, that you reward the animal when they are calm, even if it is far away from…[Read more]

Hissing is mainly a fear response, not necessarily aggression. Your cat is unsure about this new animal in her territory and is telling it to stay away. You’re right, punishing her wouldn’t do any good. If she was attacking/hunting the rabbit, that would be different (although in that case distraction/redirection would be the appropriate response…[Read more]

Is he a good hay eater? Stuffing hay in cardboard tubes etc. can be pretty fun for buns.
How big is his pellet ration?
A lot of store bought chews don’t seem that enticing to buns, but fresh willow and apple twigs seem really popular. I think just when you get them in pet stores they can be very old.

My bunnies are quite lazy during most of the day, but during their active hours, around 8am and 8-9pm, I feed them and hide their pellets around in their stacking cups and their tunnel and other toys so they have some fun and get some enrichment to get them! It’s my favorite way to get them a little bit active, and once I shake the pellet jar,…[Read more]

You have gotten good advice from Tybalt! All kinds of foraging for the daily food is good. Its so very natural for buns to have to search a bit for food or “work” to get it. Problem solving makes them smarter, they spend some extra calories and get tired in a natural way. Its even good to serve the hay on several places, it often gets them to eat…[Read more]

I think some bunnies ARE just more content with having a lazy day every day, don’t worry 🙂 My lop is about 9 months-ish and honestly since he turned 5/6 months he’s been extreeemely chilled out and NEVER plays with the million toys i have for him lol. The only thing he responds to is cardboard boxes from my post packages and his pellets when he…[Read more]

Pinky is so cute!!! Tybalt also loves dunking his things in his water bowl! I had to stop leaving toilet paper rolls with hay overnight in his pen because i would always find it soaked in his water bowl the next morning haha. Definitely get some stacking cups for Pinky and Muffin, i love watching them flail their heads about unstacking the cups 😛

One of my fosters would take the stacking cup with pellets in it and run across the room so his brother wouldn’t take it, but in the process would spill all the pellets everywhere! So by the time he stopped to eat them there were no pellets left in the cup! LOL 😆

LOL Muffin does the same thing sometimes but I’m not sure if it’s intentional. I totally forgot to order stacking cups a while ago. I’ll have to add that to my list! 🙂

Louie likes putting his favorite items in his water bowl… I end up pulling a lot of toilet paper rolls, little wooden sticks, and more out of there. Louie and Lola’s new favorites are some baby stacking cups tho! Sometimes I hide treats, and they love tossing them around to check underneath.
