Hi I don’t want to alarm you but it could well be EC. I didn’t have a rabbit savvy vet and he treated my bunny’s cataract without finding the cause. Sadly it turned out to be EC. I now travel a lot further to see a rabbit specialist vet so that anything serious will be detected. I hope things turn out better for your bun.

Oh good I’m glad to hear he gets time out. I have cats who like hunting and I was able to train them to be good with rabbits, but if the cat has been feral you’re good to be careful. Keep a spray bottle handy in case he sneaks his way into your room. As for play time, would you be able to put his cage into an exercise pen so he has a little more…[Read more]

Thanks for the response! His cage is 3 and a half feet in length but he has my whole room to roam and play around in which is about the size of your average living room. I let him out every morning and night for however long im here but if I leave I put him in.
Unfortunately I’m not able to let him free throughout our house because I’m wor…[Read more]

<p style=”padding-left: 40px;”>How cute! Keep in mind that bunnies can’t breathe through their mouths so it isn’t concerning that his mouth is closed. It looks like he’s behaving pretty normally to me.</p>
His cage does look too small though even if he’s a dwarf. It looks like he’s up on a table so I’m guessing he can’t just get out and play when…[Read more] -

I’m also doing a trio but I have 2 bonded males and a solo female. I will tell you it’s been almost 2 years and I’ve taken a glacial pace for exactly this reason. My boys are so in love and I’m afraid of losing their bond. A few things from my experience that may or may not hold true for you…
1. Prebonding is a very good idea with integrating…[Read more]

Hello all, I have a Netherland Dwarf baby bunny (Jax) who just turned 15 weeks old and I’ve had him since he was 9 weeks, from all of the videos I have since I got him his body has always moved as he breaths. His mouth is closed, lips aren’t moving just his little nose going at the same rate as his body moves. I’ve been concerned about…[Read more]

Those stacking cups are the best! I don’t use them all the time so it stays novel but when the bunnies hear them, they start zooming! There are also small animal enrichment toys where you out the pellets in and they have to figure out how to get them out and that’s fun too. Basically any game you can make of feeding time is probably going to be a…[Read more]

My boy is very food motivated as well.. I also switch up how I give his pellets. I use baby stacking cups, snuffle mats, this one interactive toy where he has to lift the lids on the board for the pellets, and I made a treat dispenser (from this forum actually) by wrapping a toilet roll with a piece of paper, twisting the ends so it’s like a…[Read more]

Bam replied to the topic Suspected fur mites – how to get rid? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 7 months ago
Fur mites are common in rabbits, but its not something we do routine treatment to prevent. The bun as a rule gets the mites from the mother, and the mites then coexist with the bun, in numbers so low that they don’t cause any problem. The bun’s immune defense keeps the numbers low.
Young buns (and humans and dogs etc) don’t have a mature immune…[Read more]

Sometimes I think they don’t mind the face mounting because they don’t realize they are being mounted, and just think they are being groomed! But the issue is if they then realize they are being mounted and bite some sensitive areas…!
Can you try working with them in a larger space? Sometimes that helps them run away from the mounting attempts…[Read more]

I’ve heard that some spontaneous regeneration of the lens can occur. So you are correct, they may still have some vision. At the very least, they will be able to distinguish between light and dark, probably some shadows, etc.
EC is treated with Panacur (fenbendazole), which is a dewormer. It’s very inexpensive so a lot of vets will simply treat…[Read more]

Hey there, everyone!
Sorry, I don’t know how to reply to individual responses so I hope this is okay haha.
So my local vet suggested that EC might be what’s causing her cataracts. She also said that it could just be genetics, exposure to sunlight, or with no clear reason at all. The blood test to check if she has EC is around $50 AUD, or we can…[Read more]

How many vets actually do cataract surgery on rabbits? I’m curious since I don’t think it’s a common surgery. From what I understand, they remove the lens and do not replace it. So the rabbit may not regain its sight. Anyway, it would have to be an exotics vet that specializes in that sort of thing. So I agree with Wick, if you went that route,…[Read more]

Thank you so much! That sounds like a great idea. Makes a lot of sense. I’m usually very gentle with him because I never want to hurt him or make him feel as though I mean harm. However, that makes it harder for me to train him with things like this because I am maybe too gentle haha. But anyway, thank you so much and I will be trying this tomorrow!!

I think there are a variety of things you can do, and it sounds like you intuitively are doing what is standard, which is taking small steps and making sure it is a positive experience. I would say on top of that, to the best of your ability, you want to lessen his exposures to you putting him down due to his flailing. I know that’s hard (I have…[Read more]

I do not have experience with eye-related issues, but I will give my thought that if you have a choice (which doesn’t impact quality of life negatively) to either have a surgery or not, it sounds like the vets you have been working with are not the best fit (with you mentioning they are mainly dog-cat experienced). The House Rabbit Society website…[Read more]

First, background story…
