He definitely eats enough, he’s been at the rescue for 3 months and has no signs of any sort of medical issue and has regular poops! He flops in front of me, and so I believe he’s comfortable with me, he just isn’t a big eater! I guess i’m just used to my rabbit who has never turned down any sort of food ever, maybe in time she can teach him.

So the gland is actually protruding? It’s not just the third eyelid that’s damaged? Yikes! That is certainly more concerning. But as Dana said, the surgery to put it back is actually pretty simply. I would definitely go that route first because it would be your best chance. Worst case scenario, he eventually ends up losing that eye. For what it’s…[Read more]

Hello again, may have to consider this – the vets are saying she has spurs and may need surgery soon but not like now. It started again, Thursday morning on and off and got bad again tonight. I thought I was at my wit’s end before…vets have no answers and neither do I. I don’t want to keep giving her medications that may cause her other issues.…[Read more]

Bun Jovi had this surgery before I got him, and my understanding from the vet was that it was pretty straightforward (you’ll often hear of this as “cherry eye”, which is relatively common). They basically use one suture to tack the gland back into place. He hasn’t had any complications afterward (it’s now been many years).

DanaNM replied to the topic Will my bunny stop pooping/peeing on bed? in the forum BEHAVIOR 5 years, 7 months ago

Unfortunately beds can be a problem area, even for neutered buns! Beds are soft and smell strongly of humans, two things that trigger marking.

He might stop… he might not. Some members have success with blocking the area temporarily to break the habit (x-pens work well for this). Other’s have put a shower curtain under a blanket on top of the…[Read more]

I love the relaxed fist technique (so it mimics a little bunny head) with my bunnies, esp the more shy ones. If they don’t put their head down, I don’t pet. And if they flinch at all when I go to pet, I also don’t pet.

Little nose rubs leading with the back of the hand are usually the least scary for the bun, as it doesn’t look like they are…[Read more]

My experience with bunnies at the rescue I volunteer at is that some of them are very wary of eating when they are being watched. Some buns will run up to grab veg from you, others won’t take it from you, even if you hold it under their nose (but then will eat it later). I don’t see it as not food motivated, but more that their other instincts are…[Read more]

The only medical thing I have heard of that can cause ears to lop are ear mites, but that has been with very bad infections that actually weigh down the ear. 🙁 So I doubt that would be the case here, as I’m sure you would have noticed that!

Ditto what others have said, sounds like you are getting on the right track!

Some people find it is easier to transition rabbits from alfalfa pellets to timothy pellets, vs. from alfalfa hay to timothy hay. So what you might want to do (slowly and gradually), is to transition them to a young rabbit pellet with alfalfa (oxbow is a fine one), and…[Read more]

I would like to add that ideally you should use what you were originally using and mix in the new pellets. I have recently taken my guys to vet and two different vets still recommend even at a young age to rationing the pellets and alfalfa hay. They both want them to develop good hay eating habits even at a young age. I have heard good things…[Read more]

Thank you so much, I appreciate the advice. I was very disappointed about not getting to see the vet and getting recommendations concerning the best diet. I have tried to educate myself the best I can but I’m new at the bunny life so I still feel a little lost at times and I’m grateful for groups like this that can point me in the right dir…[Read more]

There’s a difference between not being food motivated and not having an appetite. The former is more about a rabbit’s demeanor and self-control, while the latter can be medically relevant. It is important to distinguish between the two.

If the rabbit is literally not eating, that is a medical emergency. Pain, severe stress, anxiety… nothing…[Read more]

Since they are getting alfalfa hay, and if they are eating a good amount, you may be OK with just getting the young-adult Oxbow pellets, if that’s all you can find. The first ingredient in the adult pellets is timothy hay instead of alfalfa. A little calcium in the pee is all right, as rabbits naturally secrete excess calcium in the urine. If you…[Read more]

Hello, I have 2 three month old bunnies. I took them to the vet this morning as walk-ins and the line was ridiculous so we are setting up an appointment instead. I ran out of hay and pellets so I was looking forward to talking to the vet concerning the best diet. I am currently feeding them Oxbow Alfala Hay and Mezuri Timothy based pellets ( it…[Read more]
