An atypical gait can be a sign of EC, but I wouldn’t say all rabbits suffering from hind limb weakness do not hop. EC is a confusing ailment and it can manifest in many different ways. Symptoms can include head tilt, seizures, hind limb weakness, incontinence, and uveitis or cataracts. There have been bunnies on here that suffered from a bunch of…[Read more]

I wish there were some emergency appointments but everyone I called has a long wait. Even to get back in with my old vet is over a week. I don’t think they consider this enough of an emergency. They are some busy people!

The vet said that EC usually causes them to walk the legs instead of hop and he is hopping with them. Have you ever known that to be true?

He was neutered whenever he was supposed to be. I can’t remember what age. He is 2and a half right now. I called the vet two times to see if they would prescribe some pain meds and a dr was supposed to call me back but hasn’t.

Sorry I am still figuring out how this page works and replied in the wrong one! Thanks so much for your input. I am going to check out that site on disabilities. I don’t mind putting him in the litter box every few hours but it’s frustrating when I check on him and he has gone on the floor in between. I have cut out the side of the litter box and…[Read more]

He is 2 and a half years old. He was neutered whenever he was supposed to be. I can’t remember exactly how old he was.

I went through this with my dog. She lived to be very old and it was so difficult seeing her slow down. Near the end, we had to take her for “carries” instead of walks. I struggled a lot with what I knew was inevitable.
Things change, they grow old, they slow down, and you learn to accommodate them. What I learned is that you just need to live in…[Read more]

LBJ10 replied to the topic Young Rabbit with Mites in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 5 months ago
Fur mites are common. She probably got them from her mother. Mites can be kept somewhat in check by their immune system and then a stressful event can allow the mites to gain a stronghold. That’s when you start seeing symptoms. The good news is that they are easily treated with Ivermectin. Advantage/Advantage II are ineffective against fur…[Read more]

I agree, from your description it sounds like a joint problem. It could be the lower back like Bam suggested. Large breeds are more prone to arthritis and other joint problems as they age. EC is a differential diagnosis for hind leg weakness, although the weakness isn’t normally accompanied by pain.

Seems like outdated information to me. Smaller bunnies, if in good health, tend to live longer.

One major determinant of life span in rabbits is size. It’s the same with dogs. Big dogs and big buns live shorter lives in general than smaller breeds. Lionhead buns are not big. I have a lionhead/teddy cross. He’s 8.5 years old now.

I sure hope so, Hotot! Her urine has been back to normal for days now. I’m so happy for her. This was a real learning experience for me – i never had any clue treats could have such an impact on her. I remember mentioning to the vet that i’d bought her a few small packages of treats, and she said, really she wouldn’t advice giving any treats at…[Read more]
