Yes. Thanks for the responses. That is the tough situation I’m dealing with. I’m not sure it is legal in my state to have a wild cottontail. I’m not worried about “breaking the law” though. I didn’t go looking to take in a wild animal. She needed us and we did the loving thing for her. If that is a crime, so be it…. As I said in my original…[Read more]

I’ll second the homemade insecticidal soap.  But you have to apply it when you see the bugdy, usually in the evening.

As for slugs, leave out a pie plate filled with beer.

He’ll just be sore. He’s had invasive surgery, things will be bruised and sore, not to mention the cut at the surgery site. Give him a week and he’ll probably be back to normal 🙂 I’d say it would hurt to stretch out that way.

Hi everyone, Bentley got neutered 3 days ago and is doing great. It was at a vet who usually has the rabbit stay overnight but since no one is actually staffed overnight, I insisted that he came home that evening. After surgery, I was told he was eating and pooping  and was sent home with pain meds. Since then he has been doing very well. Eats…[Read more]

Yes, it matters where you live. Many states do not allow wildlife to be kept as pets, including cottontails. Some other states do allow it… but these are the states that pretty much allow people to keep all kinds of exotic animals as well.

I’m going to agree with Dana. He may not be getting enough. He’s only 6 months old, so (as a dwarf breed) he should just be reaching his adult size. Then he should continue to “fill out” between 6 and 9 months or so. Are they adult pellets or a junior formula?

In many states they aren’t legal to keep as pets so you may have trouble finding a vet willing to treat. In which case if she does need medical care, handing over to a rescue is really in her best interest so that she can get the treatment she needs. I’m not sure if they would release her due to how long she been in human care. If they did release…[Read more]

I heard it had made it to Montana. Georgia is still a long way away. You think it will spread that fast? I hope not! I did notice a pin on the map in Florida though, but it appears to not be linked to wild rabbits in that case. Still… that’s scary.

It’s good to be proactive. I know there are efforts to get an American-made vaccine, but it probably won’t be for some time.

The ladybugs sound promising, glad you were able to find some! For more of a “broad-spectrum” insecticide, I agree with the suggestions below for diatomaceous earth. That would probably be better than some of the other…[Read more]

Brilliant, I believe the slugs/snails doing the most damage but I haven’t transplanted anything yet and I have a new raised bed that I have yet to fill with soil, the tent idea will work with this beautifully…

Also, I was in a gardening forum and found out I can adhere cooper foil tape around the edge of the planter and the containers on my…[Read more]

I would like to know how to keep my rabbit from biting. She breaks the skin and if I try to guide her away she just lunges at me and sometimes will continue to do so even if I make a noise like it hurts. She will even chase me around sometimes. I’ve had her since she was a baby and when she got older she got mean, never had I ever heard a rabbit…[Read more]

Hey guys. I have a wild Eastern Cottontail rescue. My dog tore up the nest and injured the mom in our backyard on July 4th 2020. She was days old. Eyes weren’t opened yet. We did a lot of research and formula fed her. Against all odds, she survived and is a beautiful, thriving,  adult cottontail now. We realized we could not release her at about…[Read more]

Yes, and I can’t recommend highly enough this technique: https://binkybunny.com/forums/topic/presspressclip-nail-trim-technique/  It was a game changer for my bunnies and me!  I used to pay a local bunny shelter worker to come over and clip their nails before I found this technique.  It’s much more calming for both me and the buns because we kn…[Read more]

I agree with Dana, the main routes of transfer seems to be via insects (mosquitos and ticks, but also common flies), contact with carcasses of infected animals, and contact with feces and urine from infected rabbits.

When RVHD2 was new here (I’m in Europe) and we didnt yet have a vaccine, I took care to only feed my buns leaves from trees (apple,…[Read more]
