I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve had to watch two of my buns pass in front of me in pain (separate incidents), and it is so traumatizing. When a bun starts to crash there isn’t much we can do, but it often presents like something treatable that we’ve seen before. Try not to feel guilty, it sounds like you did everything you could for him. I highly…[Read more]

Dana provided some great suggestions. I will also add that you need to balance providing enrichment and also providing space to lounge and roam too — sometimes owners pack their rabbit’s environment so full of stuff that it is towards the rabbit’s detriment space-wise!

Sounds great! Whether you give them some run around time is up to you, I think at this point you can trust your gut. đ I think usually people only have issues with giving too much space when they do “microspace’ bonding methods.
If things get testy you can always restrict their space a little, but I’ve found mine usually seem very happy to have…[Read more]

Sorry I’m just catching up on these things!
It sounds like his teeth could be bothering him? Has your vet looked at his back molars? You can’t really see the back teeth without an x-ray, which is usually fairly quick and simple to do. I think given the changes in his appetite lately and signs of pain, I would definitely want to get a look at…[Read more]

It def sounds like boredom to me, so providing lots of “boredom buster” toys in the meantime will help. Some of the big hit chew toys at the shelter are: sea grass mats, organic palm plates, and the “Snak shak”. You can also make newspaper or cardboard mats easily and cheaply, that buns love to shred. A cardboard box turned into a hide and stuffed…[Read more]

You could likely make a nice cover by taking a bit sturdier chicken wire and then maybe using spare wood planks or something to frame it. It would be potentially big/cumbersome, but when a hawk wants a rabbit…. it will get it, regardless if you’re there. Being there is a good deterrent, but it happens very quickly. A benefit of a cover is also…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic what type of hay is this? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years, 2 months ago
Was that the dominant plant in the bag? It almost looks like mallow to me, which is an edible weed that buns can eat (and love). The presence of leafy weeds in hay isn’t a bad thing so long as most of the hay is still grass, as Wick mentioned.
I learned recently that having leafy weeds in hay also means that they hay wasn’t sprayed with…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Unable to Neuter Rabbit but I want to get him a companion. in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years, 2 months ago
Would you be open to having two rabbits as neighbors? I agree that bonding would be very difficult, but he might still benefit from having another rabbit as a neighbor (although litter box habits would likely get worse!).
There are cases of unspayed females being bonded with neutered males, but I have never heard of unneutered males being bonded.…[Read more]

Thank you. I’m trying to remember all the good things he brought me and i brought him and try not to think about watching him in pain. I just feel so easily triggered by his absence. He was such a comforting, consistent and familiar part of my day. He helped get me through the most absolutely difficult times in my life. Everything seems to be a…[Read more]

Ok. I would personally LOVE to make her an indoor rabbit, but my parents arenât really into the whole indoor animal thing. So moving indoors isnât really an option (and we donât really have enough space for a rabbit inside) Iâll figure something out I guess, thanks for the advice!

I will also add that since that’s more of a leafy hay, it may not be providing adequate fiber (I associate fiber with hard textured hays). I agree with Bam that a diet too high in protein and calcium will not be good for an adult rabbit, but if you want to sprinkle a tiny bit of use those bits as treats, ensure that the majority is still a grass…[Read more]

My guess would be legume hay (alfalfa, lucerne). It’s obviously not grass hay.
Does all the hay in the bag seem to be the same type? Horses are often fed a mix of alfalfa and grass hay. Alfalfa is high in protein and calcium. It’s too high in calcium to be good for adult buns, but it’s great for babies up till 7 months of age.

I’m very sorry for your loss.
Don’t blame yourself. The infection around his tooth could have been festering for some time, rabbits hide pain until they nolonger can. (Which is why it’s so important to do check ups).
You did everything right. You had to try and treat the inflamed tooth. An inflamed tooth that needs antibiotics is not a minor…[Read more]
