Persephone replied to the topic Re-bonding: Is it possible with aggressive behavior in one? in the forum BONDING 5 years, 1 month ago

    Wick and Dana,

Thank you both for your suggestions! I immediately bought some nose guard grids and set their cages up right by each other and so far they haven’t seem to hurt each other as a result (today is the first day).

It’s difficult to gauge their reactions to each other. It seems like O (the main aggressor) is hyper aware of eve…[Read more]

In short: Wick broke his middle finger >> it healed >> he injured another finger because it started bearing more weight since the middle finger no longer touches the floor >> that finger is pretty much healed, but not yet cleared.

To best ensure he doesn’t damage things again (he’s only got so many fingers!), he will be in a restricted pen for at…[Read more]

    Thank you for your concern.

He seems to be doing better. He’s still isn’t back to 100% but he’s at least heading that direction. Today’s the last day of medications so we will see how he does off them. He only had enough pain medicine for a half dose this morning and I’ve reduced the Metoclopramide to once a day (figure weaning him off it to make…[Read more]

Thanks so much 💜 She was just so sweet, and you’re right that deep bonding happens with seniors. Her and I were so close after all the years and some health scares, and it was really special for sure.

Going 5 days without symptoms is a great sign. Recovery is rarely a clean, straight trajectory. If you notice things getting progressively worse, then I’d be more concern.

Wick & Fable replied to the topic Soil in Rabbit Dig Box? in the forum BEHAVIOR 5 years, 1 month ago

Unfortunately I do not have much information on this. I have seen dig boxes with soil and sand, and have also read what sound like legitimate concerns for both. I would think the most natural, chemical-free soil would be safest, as that’s what rabbits who are housed outdoors are constantly exposed to and get their paws on…

If a bun eats its pellets too fast it’s better to scatter the pellets on the floor than serving them in a bowl. That way the bun has to “forage” for the pellets and can’t gorge on them.

Some rabbits are prone to gas, so it’s wise to do an elimination diet like the others have suggested. Some vegs will probably work better than others, but there…[Read more]

DanaNM replied to the topic Fully Bonded (?) and working towards free-roaming in the forum BONDING 5 years, 1 month ago

That sounds like a good plan to me! Usually the rule of thumb is to wait 48 hours once they are in their final home. Then I would go with your gut. If you let them out and they seem a little testy, I would restrict the space a bit, or give them some time free-roam and some time in the pen, until you feel confident they are doing well.

    In my…[Read more]

It can be tough when a new bun throws a wrench in the works! My first house bun (Bunston) was super destructive and I had no idea what I was doing with bunny proofing. He even taught our other bunny that chewing the carpet was the best thing ever. Many holes in the carpet later we sort of got a system down (heavy tiles + cat scratchers).

    Then our…[Read more]

    Thank you for the responses!

I have been playing with the idea of just doing a hay/pellet diet, and seeing if that helps. I actually put this test to action just a few days ago when I went on vacation. I had my pet sitters just give them hay and pellets, which worked out well, until a few days ago. They’d told me that Smokey had been eating her…[Read more]

So, the good news didn’t last long. Ernesto is sneezing and with nose discharge again. His symptoms disappeared for maybe 5 days but they are now back with a vengeance. He had a sneezing fit of maybe 20 non stop sneezes. I have already talked to the vet. He said we should continue with azithromycin until the 15 days have passed. I will probably…[Read more]

Speaking as someone with a ‘destructive’ rabbit, I’ve found toys that are anchored to be most successful. I attach cat scratching boards on the sides of her pen, tie fleece blankets against things mounted to walls, and have larger sea grass mats lining the bottom of willow tents and such. These have been successful in saving my floorboards, walls,…[Read more]

Thanks, I think you’re correct, it’s the right decision. We’ve had bunnies for years however this new male is really destroying things, despite our usual techniques with the existing bun. so we were hoping for a happy medium (it may be due to previous owners, as he’s a rescue we took in due to being left abandoned in an apartment… I’ll never…[Read more]

That’s so awesome! Sounds like they are doing great! I bet things will go smoothly with the move 🙂

And yes, be ready for some poor box habits for a bit, but they will get better again! It seems like new couples can be even messier for a little while, like they are staking out “their” new turf, but then things start to settle down again. 🙂

You’re welcome! I’m glad to hear you will try to make it work inside. I think you will find bunnies are very adaptable to changes in their housing arrangements. In the process of moving cross country with our 4 bunnies we ended up staying with my in-laws for a bit, and had to have the bunnies confined to a room, split down the middle so one pair…[Read more]

Thanks again, Dana! im happy to report that they’re doing really well! They shared the pen last night without issues. Though we may have to re-establish our litter box habits. I have them out with me because they are both the types of bun that will freak out if contained. Better for their relationship to have to have they be happy and calm. The on…[Read more]

    Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me, very good to know about the passing away. I think you’re right. The initial intention of getting a second bunny in the first instance was so our original girl would have a playmate, so I think we will just have to keep working on ways to limit the destruction and if needs be, as you suggest, we reduce the two of…[Read more]

Separating a bonded pair of rabbits is not the same as when one rabbit passes away. When one rabbit dies in a pair, the other understands what has happened as they usually spend time with the body and know the other rabbit was sick. And even this can cause depression in the widowed rabbit. But when they are separated for other reasons, they will…[Read more]
