Bam replied to the topic When to do critical care? in the forum DIET & CARE 5 years ago

A rule of thumb is to not go to bed for the night on the day of the spay until the buns has eaten at least something. She might not want pellets, but fresh greens (esp fragrant herbs) might entice her to eat. If she refuses completely, you should do Critical Care. Eating is important for maintaining  body temperature, a bun just out of surgery is…[Read more]

Hello fellow bunnies. My bunny got spayed today and she has not been eating since I picked her up. When do I begin administering critical care to my bunny? My vet told me to give her gas drops when she starts eating. Can I give gas drops while also giving critical care?

Just to chime in, this is the first I’ve heard of a bun being able to have a molar trimming without anesthesia. They have 28 teeth in that tiny mouth, so to get at the back teeth they have a special brace they use to prop their mouth open, and it is very important for the bun not to move at all (so they didn’t accidentally get cut but the drill…[Read more]

It was not a standard to perform spur trimming without sedation. The vet did tell me that it was likely that they needed to sedate her. But fortunately she was very cooperative. Maybe it had to do with where the Spurs were located. Hers were on the tongue sides. Tootoo as I mentioned in my post was a shy and sensitive bunny. She would not put on a…[Read more]

It’s off label for bunnies. The version I’ve used is always labeled for dogs.

That’s great! I have no idea how adding pellets could clear up the mushy cecotropes but I’m so glad she’s doing better!

My bunny chirps if he’s having a treat he really likes. It’s a very high pitched very quiet sound that sounds like a bird chirping. My girl makes various noises all the time especially when she’s feeling bossy. Rabbits make noises more than people expect but most of them are really quiet so you don’t always realize they’re doing it.

I called different vet offices around the place, and all of them only have them for dogs and cats:( I’m going to try to call the rabbit vet again tomorrow morning and ask. I’m just worried because it’ll wear off tomorrow morning and she might stop eating if she’s in pain 🙁 Thank you though!

Thanks Dana! I have been plucking him a lot and combing him every other day as he hates it, so I am probably more hands on as well. I’ll just keep an eye on the scale and his behavior.

I must apologize that I left one of my posts open so that it would appear that our vet was negligent.  I will need to update it.  I did reply in the same post to another participant about what I heard from our vet and it gives me peace.  Our vet advised that the Level’s I saw in the receipts are not equal to levels of sedation.  Although he did…[Read more]

And yes that 45 degree ear angle is tricky! That usually means the bun is kind of on the fence, and could go either way!

You’re welcome! Sounds like you have a good plan!

The car-ride session sounds really positive! I think with your two I would work really hard to end things while they are going well. So doing a bit shorter sessions may be the way to go. 🙂

Usually they should have pain meds for at least 3 days, so I would call around and see if they can get you some from another vet’s office. As far as I know it’s prescription-only (at least in the USA), so I don’t think you’d be able to find it at a pet store?

I tend to notice this on Bun Jovi while he’s going through a molt as well. I always start worrying that he’s dropped weight, but then when the molt is over he is back to normal (both in appearance and how his hips feel). I think the loss of the undercoat can really make things feel and look sharper.

I think I would just keep weighing him every…[Read more]

    Hello,

My bunny got spayed today 🙁 She was injected with some inflammatory/pain shot according to the vet and we got sent home with one dose of METACAM. I tried to purchase additional metacam, but they told us they were out of stock and would not restock till the end of this week. I would give the dose tonight, and they told me it should be fine…[Read more]

I’ve just read Bonny’s story. I’m so sorry that she passed due to a possible medical malpractice. My Tootoo as I mentioned in my post also required frequent molar spur filing in her last years. Luckily she didn’t require any kind of sedation; the vet was able to just snap the Spurs directly. I would have been so worried if she had ever needed…[Read more]

Lowpile is fine, but it’s still important to check the bun’s feet regularly, of course. (That’s important regardless of flooring).
