kaitland started the topic How to get rid of weevils after they are feeding and breeding off bunny hay in the forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A 5 years ago

My apartment seems to have a lot of weevils in it lately and it also seems like they are feeding off my bunny’s hay!! Not sure what to do because I can’t kick my bunny out of his room for a few days to spray insecticide, my apartment is very small. Even if I scrap all the bunny hay, he still has to have hay in his litterbox, plus he gets the hay…[Read more]

Based on what you’ve mentioned, I think heat may be the main factor here, especially if she’s always been like this. The signs/huffs can actually be a sign of relaxation too. As long as her health-related behaviors (energy, poop, pee, appetite) seem normal/unchanged, it sounds like she is sighing in the heat of the moment, perhaps!

1.) Yes and yes. I took her to Northwood Animal Hospital. They are very experienced with bunnies.

2.) I was told by the rescue that she was 10 months (now is 11 months). But the vet said she thinks she’s around a year to a year and a half (not that big a difference).

3.) Yes she is spayed. I got her 5 days after she was spayed, so she’s been fix…[Read more]

I know you’d like answers, but a few questions first to narrow down what might be going on:

    1. Is the vet you saw a 1) rabbit-experienced AND 2) exotic veterinarian?
    2. How old is your rabbit?
    3. Is your rabbit spayed? If so, how long?
    4. Has she always been this way?
    5. What is her diet (content + quantities)?
    6. Is it relatively hot where she is housed?

Hello, my bunny doesn’t have much energy. She sleeps almost all day. She also breathes super fast and sometimes “sighs” or “huffs”. I took her to the vet and she said her lungs are normal and she is healthy. But I’m a first time rabbit owner and am still not certain if this behavior is normal. I’ve had her for a month now. I’m not sure if she’s j…[Read more]

If he is eating, that’s a really good sign. I would keep monitoring and if you notice any health behaviors decline (eating, energy, poop, general body language), you may want to go to a vet (rabbit-experienced and exotic, if possible). Keep pushing hay and water. Perhaps refresh his hay if you haven’t recently. Also, getting him to move around a…[Read more]

I have fleece in my rabbits cage for the floor and when I went to clean it tonight I saw a giant hole in it and a ton of little holes. I know he ate them because there wasn’t any pieces of fleece in his cage. He is eating less hay but still eating it same goes for treats and pellets. Please help I am worried.

Yes, regular vet is definitely an exotics vet and only does exotics (no cats or dogs at all).

For the low cost clinic vet, they did specifically mention that they are limited to one anesthetic that can be delivered via mask instead of through full intubation that a full service vet could provide. Knowing that makes me think that she can hopefully…[Read more]

Thank you both for your replies. It’s not any easier this morning but I know that she’s no longer in pain and that she’s bouncing around meadows and eating lots of carrots and banana (those were her favourite)

she’s been sent to be cremated and we’ll hopefully have her back next week. I find myself going in to her bedroom and just sit talki…[Read more]

I’m so sorry- I know that was a terrible shock. She was beautiful.

Sadly, many of us find outthat bunnies are more delicate than we know. They also are very good at hiding illness, so when we do begin to see any symptoms it can be more serious. It’s not something you can be expected to spot. They are magicians at hiding problems. She was very…[Read more]

If you’re starting to see some mounting it’s a good idea to separate now before it escalates to a fight. If you house them side-by-side they won’t forget each other. 🙂

Also double check their sexes! Young rabbits are often mis-sexed.

Your vet will have their own preferences for when to spay, but between 4-6 months old is acceptable.

Did this happen with the move? Or after the move?  If so, it may get better with time. I also agree with Wick about litter box set-up. I have some buns that will pee and poop where-ever they can reach the hay, so I have to have it in a rack on the far side of the box, so they have to actually hop in to reach the hay.

For cleaning up the carpet,…[Read more]

So if your regular vet is an exotics vet, then they likely do plenty of spays. I think the best thing is to just ask them how many rabbit spays they do, and whether they will be able to confidently perform a spay with the complication she has. A good test is to ask what kind of after care they recommend (they should mention pain meds,…[Read more]
