Thank you so much, Bam!! This is great to know.
Yes, Teddy does really like having his ears brushed with the baby brush. We’ve been doing that and then rubbing with the rosewater wipes afterwards. Now I’ll try finishing off with the coconut oil or a propylene glycol lotion if I can find it here.
Thanks so much again!! 🙂

Emeraid has very high bio-availability and is thus better for buns in acute circumstances. It’s like pre-digested food. If we’d have it here Id opt for that over CC for emergencies. CC will do very well for long-term maintenance supplement feeding (like I had to do with my Vilde).
Sub q fluids would really be great to have on hand for these type…[Read more]

It’s quite normal for he to feel exhausted. Just keep her warm and make sure she had nice things to eat when/if she likes to. She’ll need a good night’s rest, and I suspect so do you 🙂

Yes, if it were mites you would’ve seen progression i e worsening. There would be (skin colored) plaques and increaibg amounts of flakes.
The lotion I use is called Propyless. It has 200 mg propylene glycol per 1000 mg, i e 20% propylene glycol. Its a human grade pharmaceutical, albeit otc. I dont expect the brand name would be the same in the…[Read more]

Oh, I didn’t know about fur mites! I looked at the page on MediRabbit, and I’ll check closely once Teddy wakes up from his nap, but I think it’s unlikely in his case. I haven’t noticed anything that looks like scabbing, just white dandruff-like flakes. And it’s been this way for years, honestly, so I am guessing it would have progressed more by…[Read more]

Rabbits normally carry a certain amount of fur mites that dont cause trouble as long as the bun’ immune defense is strong enough to keep the mites in check. The immune defense however weakens with age, in humans as well as pets.
This said, flaky skin on the ears doesn’t have to be caused by mites. It can be “just” dry skin. Our long time forum…[Read more]

I totally feel your frustration about there not being a rabbit ER vet! I had that issue when I lived in CA. And warming up a cold bun can really help! Bun Jovi almost died of stasis a few years ago and warming him up really helped keep him alive until we could get to the vet. You might also try hay tea with your buns, it was the only thing Bun…[Read more]

Do you think it could be fur mites? The back of the ear is a common spot for them to start, esp with reduced grooming and old age.
Ruling out mites, I believe I remember someone on here using a tiny amount of coconut oil for this. Hopefully someone with a better memory will chime in!

Hey everyone! 🙂
So Teddy (age 13 1/2) has had dry skin flaking off on the front and backs of his ears for quite a while. I seem to recall (but not 100% sure) being told not to use lotion for bunnies, and our vet said we could try MalAcetic wipes. We tried them, but they didn’t help and are labeled as “drying”. The past several months, we’…[Read more]

Anesthesia these days is not a big issue for an otherwise healthy bun. It was different back in the day, but rabbit medicine is rapidly evolving.
When you get her home just make sure she keeps warm, f ex by offering her a warm waterbottle or a microwaved sock filled with rice (put a glass of water in the microwave when you microwave the sock).…[Read more]

I had tried to give her some fluids earlier too but she was mostly just letting things dribble out of her mouth, she did seem to like the tea a lot better. Poor little girl was so lifeless, I actually thought I had lost her at one point. I ended up just scooping her up and cuddling her with a hot water bottle on the couch, she seemed to like that…[Read more]

For rabbit experienced vets and rabbits who are generally of good health, anesthesia is typically safe and many make it out fine. Fingers crossed that things are going well!

GI transit time is about 6 hours I believe, so if he’s doing fine following that, you’re likely in the clear!

He seems to be doing okay. I can’t tell if he passed it or not, but he’s eating and drinking and pooping like normal, and he doesn’t seem to be in any pain. He’s asleep right now, but he ate some treats earlier.

Thanks! she was getting a lot better, but then I went on a vacation for a weekend, and my mom took care of her, and now she is terrified and runs away whenever i come near. My mom is great with buns, and my bun loves her, so idk what happened. maybe she’s is just scared of me because i have new smells on me? Or did she forget me? How long is a buns memory?
