Your thoughts on separating cats.

I was just wondering what you guys thought about this.

As some of you know, we have 5 cats. Shadow and Cloud ( brother and sister), Emmett and Edward ( brothers), and Clara.

Shadow LOVES one of my sisters! He follows her around and waits out side the bathroom door when she takes a shower. A few years ago my sister went on a trip for 2 weeks and he got so depressed that he wouldn’t eat and lost a bunch of weight.

Edward loves my other sister. He sleeps with her every night and purrs and cuddles with her. This is weird because he HATES to be touched normally unless he is in the right mood. When I try to pet him he sinks his back down to avoid my hand. This summer my sister went away and worked at a camp and Edward would walk down the hallway where her room is and cry outside her door.

My sisters say that they are going to bring the cats with them when they move out but would that be fair to separate them? Emmett and Clara would be the ones we would keep ( Me and my parents). We already know they do fine without the other cats because they live at our other house all summer. But what about Shadow and Edward? Is it fair to them to be separated from the other cats?  Also Cloud used to be afraid of every thing, but when we got Clara she perked up and plays with her all the time! but she loves to sleep with her brother Shadow. Would it be better for her to stay with Clara? or her brother?

Just some random things that have been on my mind alot lately.

I have never found that cats are like rabbits in terms of bonding to other cats. I would try not to worry about it, they are going with the humans they love

Cats do not bond to each other the way some other animals do. It’s thought that they aren’t even social with one another naturally – but if thrown together in a house will tend to get along. I have had this happen with my sister and our separate cats as well. Except in our situation her cat became attached to me, and cried for months after she moved.

I don’t think it’s mean. When cats love their person, they REALLY love them…usually more than another cat.

A couple years ago we had two cats Naddie and Littlecat, they were both 15 and 14 years old and we’d had them since they were kittens. Well when my parents divorced my dad took Littlecat because he liked my dad the best and my mom kept Naddie because she liked my mom the best. Well that lasted about a month and they both had lost weight and the vet said Littlecat was depressed. So, Littlecat was returned to my mom and they both got better and happier (they’ve since passed away though). Then on the other hand my aunt left for Montreal and her cat Reeses (16 years old) is at the farm now and misses her A LOT. I want to bring my cat with me when I leave but I think he might miss my mom too much and our other cat.

I know this isn’t helpful, but I think it really just depends on the cat.
