So – in the past month… I have learned how to give Sub-Qs, force-feed successfully, and this week I learned how to give injections to rabbits!

I was wondering what all you guys know how to do or can do for your buns?  And other things I should focus on learning?

I’ve been doing volunteering for awhile now.  This week was my first time ever helping someone elses rabbit in need though!  A rabbit down the street (a girl who is very new here) has been needing injections as he decided to chew on a wall with very high lead content and got lead poisioning.  Rabbit Wranglers (one of the two rescues I volunteer at) called me to help me administer the injections!  So three times a day I’ve been going and administering injections to this gorgeous little man!

In the future, I’ve become very interested in becoming a medical foster bunny momma.  Rabbit Wranglers specifically is always in need of medical fosters as they only have SIX foster mommas who know how to administer Sub-Qs!  I’m so happy I know how to do them now.  When the boyfriend and I move to a bigger place, I’ve already said I am going to medically foster!  It’s been so rewarding helping this little guy!!

Sometimes I think I know how to do things for a long list of other animals, but not so much with the buns. LOL There are several animals where I work that need medications and such. And I do know how to give reptiles injections, but that is from a lizard we had many years ago. That’s almost the same as a rabbit, right? =p

A LIZARD?!!? That sounds so much WORSE than having to give a rabbit one! LOL. I would be terrified!

Oh sure, you didn’t want him to bite ya! LOL
It might come in handy if any of the snakes or turtles ever need an injection where I work. I don’t know about the birds though. I think that would be tough. =p
So doing it with a bun would be a breeze then, right?

Also have done Sub Q (well my hubby does most of the work) and force-feeding. Never given an injection to a bunny. Had a diabetic cat that needed injections every day and have given horses shots many times but never a bunny. Hope I never have to, they are just so delicate and tiny.

I would pass out if I had to stick a needle in my rabbit!!! Or any rabbit for that matter! (I’m extremely squeamish.). However, I have force fed. Haha I sound lame! XD

Just force feeding. I’m quite sure I can give sub q to someone elses animal but I just think I’d too squeamish to ever do it myself! And ditto injections! I don’t even watch when Mikey (the dog) gets his! Your definitely better off then me

Hahaha! Oh Lula and K&K – you guys don’t give yourselves enough credit. I bet if your bun was like Simba you would stick him with the darn needle to! I was like…. either I do this… or he stops eating… and then only bad things can happen. JUST STICK IT IN THE BUNNY! Hahaha. I had to talk myself into it but it’s fine now.

I’m getting pretty good with the whole giving meds and force feeding thing, as well as butt baths… havent had to do any sub-q fluids yet, or injected meds. Crossing my fingers I won’t have to any time soon

I can do the sub-q’s and injections as well – not sure it makes me more knowledgeable but it can be helpful when you have a sick rabbit.

Can’t do enema’s or check temperature however which would be super useful as well and maybe I’ll never have to – always wanted to ask the vet to show me how to take temperatures.

Taking care of special needs rabbits is a huge challenge especially when you have so many of your own – I’ve done it many times with my own rabbits and fosters and you really have to think about how much time and care it is and if it will affect you caring for your own rabbits…just a thought.

I’ve never done anything for my buns! Just done a force feed and watering when I FIRST became a bunny mom. It was a terribe first experience in rabbit owning. I’m glad I stuck with it though because I’m madly in love with these two! I have had to do enemas and temperature taking to a puppy and given fluids. But never on a bunny. That’s sounds incredibly hard lol (mother dog was on the run while giving birth and left a trail of puppies. abandoned, I bottle fed since day 1)

Great points, Sarita. I will definitely make sure I really think it through as I had not thought about that much before.

I know when getting Simba out of stasis – it really took away time from my other buns. Sitting with him on the floor for hours trying to get him to eat… with a medical foster that would have to be an expected obligation when they were on the bad side of things. I’m glad you pointed that out. My bunnies always come first but if I decided to take on a medical foster he would deserve the same. Something I will really need to think about.

Now I’m curious as to how to do enemas and temp taking!
