Hi everyone,  just realizing yesterdays news is discontinued. Has anyone found good alternatives? I can’t use horse stall pellets or wood stall pellets.

Is there a newspaper based replacement you would recommend? Thank you!!

Small Pet Select makes one, but it’s a bit pricey.

I have not actually used these two yet, but these are the new choices of litter I just purchased to try since Yesterday’s News is no longer being made:

            • ExquisiCat Naturals
            • Fresh News

Hopefully this is helpful to you!

Thank you so much! I was just looking at the ExquisiCat Naturals, but saw that it has baking soda and something called Zoolite. Is there a different one that maybe I can’t seem to find?

In same boat, tried some oxbow  pellets and they were pricey and I didn’t like them as much. Was going to try the small pet select next. If anyone has tried them as a substitute,  what did you think?

Any update on trying the new litter stuff?

So I ended up returning the ExquisiCat litter (thank you, @Lindsayjgunn, for bringing that weird ingredient to my attention!), and I have been using the Fresh News these past few weeks and have had no issues with it. I think it absorbs well and doesn’t smell bad at all, it seems like it’s a pretty close alternative to Yesterday’s News, in my opinion, but everyone else might not think that way. (Personally, I am able to use pine-based litter pellets, so I also picked up a bag of Feline Pine, which I am trying next just to compare) I would say the best paper alternative would be Fresh News, but the SPS option may be good too; it’s just a bit too pricey for me for the amount that you get.

I wish we all had better answers. I am so bummed that Yesterday’s News is no more! I had religiously used that litter for 10+ years now. If anyone else has input please be sure to let us know!

Something just occurred to me. I’m wondering if they are discontinuing because there isn’t a consistent source of recycled newspapers anymore? I mean, most people do not get newspapers anymore. It’s sad because I used Yesterday’s News for many years too. Perhaps the other newspaper-based litters are not far behind.

That’s a good point @LBJ10. I know when I looked it up online, they made it sound like there was only 1 factory/plant in the whole U.S. that produced the Yesterday’s News pellets, and the newspaper recycling from that city and a few close cities were the only sources of paper for it. That was a surprise to me.

As for the Fresh News brand litter, I actually live pretty close to their main headquarters and where the recycling program initially started. They get paper from large community recycling bins called “Paper Gators” – a local business or organization can request one for their parking lot for people to recycle paper into. The cool thing about Paper Gators is that they accept a lot of different kinds of paper and not just newspaper print. So at the library I work at, we recycle lots of different things in it (there are still rules and guidelines obviously, and apparently the Paper Gator folks are pretty stingy with the rules which I actually appreciate since I am using this litter for my buns now)

I am still looking  for alternatives myself, I  tried oxbow which wasn’t bad, but breaks down a lot more and didn’t quite last as long. Small pet select is slightly better but they like to toss them about, or they just don’t have the weight? Not sure, but ends up knocked out of the box. May check out Fresh News, also curious as to the pine pellets.

Unsure of all the litters offered by SPS, but SPS has a pine pellet litter as well that, in my experience, is identical to the Tractor Supply Co pine pellet litter many people use. SPS’ version is more expensive and seems to more reliably not smell like wood (i.e., scentless).

Hi Everyone, thank you for your previous posts and my sincerest apologies for the delay in my response. Thought I wrote back, but was out of town and my internet connection was spotty so it probably didn’t upload.

Anyways, as its been a few months, has anyone had any success with any new litters? @Lindsey, so glad you were able to figure that out and return the ExquisiCat litter. I tried the Fresh News as well but my bun really wanted to eat it… Not sure if it is because it has Zoolite in it.

Just wanted to see if anyone has found any other alternatives or had any positive experience with alternate products? Thank you!
