Good day! I am new to rabbits and this website and will do my best to not violate any of the rules. I want to give a little background before I introduce my buns and I’ll give a quick warning that this story includes rabbits living outdoors which some folks might not agree with.
I live on an island in the Caribbean, which is one of the last places I would expect to find cute little black/white/grey bunnies hopping around. I’ve been here about 7 years and love the tropical life. I have 2 cats who are indoor/outdoor and they also love their island life. Approximately 6 months ago we moved to a new house and discovered that there were a few rabbits living in the yard. Obviously not endemic to the island, they must have been released by a previous owner in years passed and apparently had continued to procreate and live in the neighborhood with limited success. The neighbors would feed them veggies scraps so I joined in and they became comfortable around me. When they saw me coming out with the bowl of veggies they would run over and even hop in my lap to get the good bits. One rabbit in particular, Flopsy, was the most friendly and also seemed to be the dominant one of the bunch. After a couple months she was letting me give her head rubs, grinding her teeth with pleasure, and coming when I called. I started letting her in the house and she learned to use the cat door just like my two fat kitty cats. (If you’re wondering, my cats like to watch the bunnies but have never tried to hurt them, which was a relief to the whole neighborhood). I set her up with a food bowl and a litterbox and she got pretty comfortable.
As you might be anticipating, she was pregnant and had a litter in the house about 3 months ago. She was a wonderful mom and nursed her babies twice a day and they grew up big and strong! I was able to adopt out one male last week to a happy home. The other two, Xena (female, grey/white) and Domino (male, black/white), are living in two separate enclosures in my living room. Flopsy has stopped coming in the house as much, likely because her babies are done nursing and are hitting puberty and she wants nothing to do with them. I also suspect that she has a new outdoor litter to tend to somewhere. I still feed Flopsy and spend time with her outside though. She is such a good bunny. She has settled back into her old routine and hangs with the other rabbits in the yard.
Anyway, throughout this whole process I have frequented this website for advice and wanted to finally join in and introduce myself. We are keeping Xena and Domino as indoor rabbits because we have fallen in love with their silly faces. They will be 3 months old in another week which means Domino should be ready to be altered soon. From what I’ve read it sounds like I need to wait a little longer before having Xena altered so I guess they’ll stay in their separate enclosures for a while longer. When they were babies they were so cute and cuddly with each other! It will be nice when they can be put back together safely and start the bonding process.
Give a warm welcome to the two luckiest bunnies on the whole island.
