Worse case scenario: lose the eye…

Our bun, Link has had a sore eye for some time now, it was potentially a flare up of E. Cuniculi brought on my the stress of us trying to bond him with his once friend, Navi.

He’s been on a fairly high dose of Metacam and Panacur for a while and Baytril at the start of the problem.

His eye, for the most part, has been looking like it’s healing. There has been significant discolouration of his iris on the whole, though.
But recently, we’ve noticed a small, white Granuloma has appeared at the top of his pupil. 

So, back to the vets for a check up today, and the Granuloma has got a fair bit bigger.
The vet is going to speak to an eye specialist, but it looks like surgery to remove the lens, or, worse case scenario, remove the eye altogether.

So, more blood was taken, and we’re kind of in limbo… Just have to wait and see how he is, keep giving him the Metacam, and he’s four weeks on, four weeks off with the Panacur… :/

I have no helpful answers for you either, but losing his eye might not be such a bad thing! Of course you would prefer him to keep both, but I have a disabled rabbit and have found that she lives a very full and happy life. He may even be better off for having it removed, as it will avoid any other flair ups

I`m sorry to hear things have gotten so bad with his eye. I really hope the specialist can help you out.

If worse comes to worse, though, bunnies are quite amazing at adapting with one eye removed. I still hope it doesn`t come to that, though, since I know it would be very stressful for you.

To be honest, we know he would cope amazingly without the eye. Most animals cope really well with a ton of different disabilities… It’s us humans that are, by comparison, a little pathetic

I think the thing we’re most worried about is the stress… I know buns don’t cope well with stress at the best of times, but Link seems a little less capable than most… Just the administering of Baytril is enough to have him cowering under a chair for two days… He’s such a troubled little thing.
And he had such a brilliant start in life… Just after losing two bonded bun friends, he just doesn’t cope well with it all now.

He’s such a lovely, yet angry, grunty little thing. <3

Haha that’s very true! My 3 legged bun gets on better running and hopping around that my 4 legged one! Aw bless him, my Barney didn’t like medicine at all either, but if you can get him through it he will be all the better for it! Well done for being such good bunny parents!

Just had a call from the vet, Link’s bloods are back, he’s still producing E. Cuniculi anti-bodies, so, there is still an active infection, or there is a delay.

Our vet has been in touch with an eye specialist and me and my wife have been talking, and, because of the granuloma on his lens, we’ve come to the conclusion that removing the lens before things get much worse is far preferable to him losing his eye further down the line.

He’s a house bun with a perfectly safe environment that he’s comfortable in, so I don’t imagine he’ll have any problems.

Although, the odd playful kitty friend of his might start taking advantage!

What happens if the lens get removed? Is that the same as keeping the eyeball but being blind, or does the lens heal/get replaced? I’d imagine you’d be put on some waiting list for a rabbit lens donor or something like that.

If the lens gets removed, he’ll just have little to know vision in one eye…

The granuloma has gotten significantly larger recently, and, his lens, iris and the granuloma all now appear to be stuck to the front of his eye and the granulona appears to be getting bigger by the day.

We’re have an appointment with both an eye specialist and exotic specialist tomorrow at Glasgow University.

I cannot stress how important pet insurance is. This specialist tomorrow is £180 just for the consultation.

We took little Link to the specialist. He said although eye removal may be a last resort, they’d like to try some aggressive drug therapy first with baytril and steroid eye drops. Link is just going to love us….
Back to see the specialist in a month. Fingers crossed.

He was a bit uncomfortable last night after all the poking and prodding yesterday. We started him on the eye drops last night which he is fine with as we don’t need to man-handle him to administer them. The baytril was started this morning. We will pay for that later. I’m convinced he will be digging everything up today and we’ll come home to a complete bombsite
