In the past year my 3 year old holland lop has had worms twice and I think I just found one again last night. I’m just at a lost of words as to where he can be getting them. I’ve sent his stool sample in 3 times and all come back negative. He has gotten an injection for tape worm and he’s been on panacur dosage twice. The last time he had worms was about 3 months ago. We did the 2 dose medicine of panacur and also started him on revolution. He doesn’t go outside, I use carefresh for his litter, his pellets are from oxbow and I was using oxbow for his hay but decided to switch to small pet selects hay. I even stopped giving him fresh greens because of fear that he could be getting worms from that. I even switched his hay also cause I thought maybe the worms could be coming from his oxbow hay. His cage is cleaned every night! I’m just at a lost now on where this is coming from and if I’m doing anything wrong I just feel so bad. The worms look like a small rice grain, a clear jelly like substance. It’s just gross and I’m tired of constantly looking for them. I thought we were in the clear these pass few months and than last night I see a small clear like worm on his bum . It broke my heart. Can anyone offer me any advice or suggestions at this point? Or will I have to just keep deworming him every few months? I just don’t know what to do anymore.

I think it may be something in his environment, non-bunny related. Is he free-roam or have a free-roam space that you can investigate? Maybe crawl on the floor and take a look around and wash any adjacent bedding, sheets, curtains, and disinfect surfaces and corners, as well as vacuum the carpets very well.

I’m not familiar with worms and how they breed/spread, but that’d be my best idea based on what you’ve said and my experience with Wick’s fungal infection, which is also re-occurring. I know it re-occurs because there are spores in my apartment.

What kind of worms was he diagnosed with the first time? Were they sure it was tapeworm?
I’m thinking about a bad case of coccidium, but that would be detectable by poop exam. Did you save the worm you found to have the vet examine it?

He is pretty much free roam but is caged at night and for a few hours while I’m at work. I’m constantly cleaning his environment. His cage gets cleaned every night. Fresh hay, fresh litter, everything. I vacuum almost every other day cause I’m so paranoid of this lol.. I’m just at a lost right now.

At first he was treated for tapeworm with an injection. But that didn’t work so then he was treated for pinworm with a 2 dose series of panacur, that seemed to work but a few months later they came back. Did another dose of the 2 series panacur and than also started him on revolution which is like a frontline for small animals for fleas and ticks. Since the poop samples come back negative, it’s hard to know exactly what worm it is..I’ve even tried to see if I could put the worms in a small container “gross” but they end up like disintegrating pretty much.

Tapeworms (which look like you described) are acquired from fleas (the eat an infected flea while grooming), so I think treating with revolution was the right move!

How odd that his stool came back negative though…

Can you post a photo next time you see one? (I’m a parasitologist…)
